Adapted from a novel by Liu Liu (六六) with the same title.

Seri, an unknown yet talented female chef from the country, arrives in Tokyo to work at French restaurant, Etoire, but discovers that they have gone out of business due to the departure of their main chef. Together with the restaurant's former manager, she opens a French restaurant of her own and begins to recreate the flavors her late father mastered as a famous gourmet chef. Unfortunately, Etoire returns with an unscrupulous manager, and to make matters worse, Seri learns that it happens to be owned by her birth mother living in Paris who she hasn't seen since she was a child. The comedy manga's story centers on Oshako Jaeger, a woman who can't date men who don't live in fancy homes. She goes around judging the homes of various men.

The film tells the story of Takata (Takakura Ken), an aging Japanese fisherman who has been estranged from his son for many years. His daughter-in-law Rie summons him to the hospital when his son is diagnosed with terminal cancer, but his son refuses to see him. Rie gives him a videotape of his son's unfinished documentary about the regional Nuo opera of China's Yunnan province. Takata decides to journey to the Chinese region to shoot the film in his son''s stead. He does so with the hopes of connecting to, and understanding, his son. The film's title alludes to a fabled story of Guan Yu's perilous solo journey to reunite with his sworn brother and lord Liu Bei, as told in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It is a story about brotherly love and loyalty celebrated in Chinese folklore and operas. The film draws the parallel between the local folk opera and Takata's quest to fulfill his son's wish.

Xin Lei (Barbie Xu), a girl from a wealthy family, and Qin Lang (Alan Luo), a guy who came to Shanghai to pursue his dream of becoming an artist, meet by accident at a corner when her car and his bike crash into each other. They meet again when Xin Lei goes to the restaurant that Qin Lang works at. They truly get to know each other when Xin Lei asks him to teach her how to make oyster pancakes. Then, Xin Lei's parents' company goes bankrupt. Without telling her, Xin Lei's parents go into hiding, leaving only a plane ticket and a key to their house in Taiwan. To make matters worse, Xin Lei's fiance breaks the engagement, due to his parents' wishes. The only two people she has now are Qin Lang and her best friend Xi Xian. Qin Lang then tells her that he is leaving for Taiwan, so they bade farewell. When Xin Lei arrives in Taiwan, she finds out that Qin Lang's family has been living in the house for years! After much controversy, Qin Lang's grandmother finally lets her stay. Thus begins a magical love story.

The story chronicles upon the past of Gai Kurenai and Jugglus Juggler, the original series' main protagonist and antagonist, who were once heroes fighting on the side of light.
