Set in Harbin under the puppet Manchukuo regime in 1944, Song Zhuo Wen, an underground party member disguised as a railway police officer, is mistakenly identified by the head of the spy department, Guan Xue, as her lifesaver—but is actually Zhuo Wen's long-lost twin brother, Song Zhuo Wu. To uncover the ultimate mission of Kwantung Army officer Asano Daigo in Harbin, Zhuo Wen decides to use Guan Xue to infiltrate the spy department, but the sudden appearance of Zhuo Wu plunges him into unexpected trouble. Guan Xue is cold-blooded and suspicious, cruel and ruthless, while Zhuo Wu is impulsive by nature, often unintentionally sabotaging Zhuo Wen's operations. "Shogun" is set in feudal Japan in the 1600s at the dawn of the Battle of Sekigahara. As the enemy's siege approaches Lord Yoshii Toranaga, the strongest military commander in the Sengoku period, a British navigator called James Blackthorne, who comes bearing secrets that could save him from his predicament, drifts ashore into his territory.

Toranaga orders Mariko, a mysterious religious noblewoman who can speak English, to translate for Blackthorne (who later becomes known as Anjin) and a bond begins to form between the two. As the war rages on, their fates intertwine as they navigate among this treacherous political landscape while caught in a power struggle between two of the most powerful daimyōs.

10 years after his young daughter became a victim in a case and slipped into a coma from which she has never awakened, Natsume Nobuto, a former officer at a juvenile detention centre, has turned into a policeman. Now over 40, this latecomer has been a rookie detective with the Violent Crimes Section at Higashi Ikebukuro Police Precinct’s Criminal Affairs Division for four months. The section is in charge of deadly crimes such as murder and robbery. Higashi Ikebukuro Police Precinct’s jurisdiction of east Ikebukuro is an area where an entertainment and nightlife district has spread out behind high-rise buildings while a short walk away is an old town streetscape. This district of contradictory elements is like looking at a microcosm of society with its many facets. Natsume teams up with the veteran detective Fukumori Seiichi and younger female detective Adachi Ryoko to deal with cases as he finds out the truth. However, Fukumori and Ryoko learn through their inquiries that Sato had been tormenting mother and son over money matters. They head to the hospital where Keiko works. At the same time, Natsume has been intently watching Yuma who keeps playing the claw game at a game centre.
