San Sheng Mu was a kind and beautiful deity who saved the life of Liu Yan Chang, a mortal scholar. The two fell in love and had a son, Chen Xiang. San Sheng Mu's older brother, Er Lang Shen, found out about their romance and led the Heavenly Brigade in pursuit of the family. During this time of peril, San Sheng Mu gave the Lotus Lantern to Yan Chang to protect him and their son. Soon she was captured and pinned beneath Mount Hua. Thereafter, Yan Chang and Chen Xiang hid in a small village making a meager living. Sixteen years later, Chen Xiang has grown up. Kadesurang is a 25-year-old chubby archaeologist. One day she suffers an accident after meeting Karakade's ghost and goes back in time to the Ayutthaya era around 300 years ago. She wakes up in Karakade's dead body right after she died.

Karakade was a very mean and selfish person. Everyone hated her, especially her betrothed Date, who liked another girl but his dad and Karakade's dad were best friends and they promised that their kids would marry each other. Karakade tries to kill her rival but her rival's servant dies instead. Date and his dad chant a spell in order to punish the culprit, which results in Karakade's death.

After Kadesurang wakes up in Karakade's body, everyone around her is confused now that she's acting like a completely different person. But her optimistic and playful personality slowly wins over everyone, including Date, who falls in love with the new Karakade.

Homeless on the streets of Kuala Lumpur, Hsiao Kang is robbed, beaten and left for dead; he is found and nursed by Rawang, an immigrant worker, who lives in the shell of a modernist building abandoned during construction. Rawang`s feelings for his patient may or may not be sexual, but there`s definitely something like lust in the eyes of Chyi, a waitress in a run-down old coffee shop, when they light upon the recovering Hsiao Kang. And so a triangle forms as a blanket of noxious fog settles on the city and everyone has trouble breathing. Simultaneously erotic and comical, the film underpins director Tsai`s deadpan allegory with hints of social realism.
