When one door closes, a window always opens in its place. Yu Nana is a graduate student who has been pursing her doctorate degree in psychology for the past eight years. In exchange for the photos, Eisuke promises to give Nana a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn.

It tells the rise of Ito Jakuchu, a rich merchant turned talented artist in mid-Edo era Kyoto. He receives the support and admiration of his friend and mentor, Zen monk and poet, Daiten Kenjo. An apprentice from a toy shop in town, Iwajiro, who longs to become a famous artist himself, envies Jakuchu's connections and position. Iwajiro, who does not have the same privileged background as that of Jakuchu's, vows to beat him someday. Other notable artists that they cross paths with are Ikeno Taiga and his wife, Gyokuran, who both specialize in Chinese ink wash paintings. They are all guided by words of wisdom by the calligrapher, poet, and founder of the sencha tea ceremony Baisao. They are but a few of the personalities that make the historical and artistic atmosphere of Edo-era Kyoto, beautiful, rich and alive.

They visit the local doctor and then go to Tokyo for an examination. It turns out they are all highly radioactive. Their symptoms become worse, and the contaminated fish causes a panic. The men are taken to hospitals in Tokyo, leaving their families behind. The radio operator, Kuboyama (Jukichi Uno), dies from the radiation.

Izumi Noda, a librarian who prefers being surrounded by books rather than being in contact with people, meets Latin Yoneya Nell, who aims to become an architect with a joint party taken by Kumiko.
