Koizumi Akira, a son of a popular songstress, travels to a small-town cinema in far-off Kochi Prefecture to watch the closing movie before the theatre shuts its doors forever. The movie takes place in the same village but during the Showa 30s (1950s), in the years following the war. The story follows a young soldier who washes ashore on the beach one day, having lost his memory. He is "adopted" by the family who owns the village cinema and given the name Shimanto Taro. Although his past remains a mystery, Taro becomes good friends with many of the villagers, discovering his love for movies and falling in love with a feisty young girl.

"April Rhapsody" is a biographical sketch of the love story of renowned Chinese poet Xu Zhi Mo. The plot follows Xu in his quest for a soulmate, a quest that led him to relationships with three remarkable women. These three women each typified a part of the culture in China during the early 20th century, and together, they defined the emotional world of the young avant-garde poet.

In the year 1936, a new party member accidentally discovers secret information that triggers the Xi'an Incident, thus beginning a story of infighting and schemes. When he was young, Wu Zhongming (Wang Xuebing) was separated from his older brother Wu Boying by kidnappers. He joins the Communist party later on and gets captured during one of his missions. His older brother tries to rescue him but dies in his stead. This happens during a time before the Xi'an Incident and the city has turned into a crucial place for vital intel. To win the final victory, the Communist party sends Wu Zhongming to go undercover as his twin brother Wu Boying and infiltrate the Kuomintang.

Detective Hu Xiaoman meets low level criminal Da Bao during an investigation of a missing heiress. Inspite of being on opposite sides of the law, the two work together to solve cases.

While on patrol duty, EU sergeant Ling San Fung and her team are called to assist a criminal chase. A gun battle erupts and San Fung loses her father, who dies from a stray bullet to the head. San Fung continues the pursuit, but a strange natural phenomena suddenly turn her away, taking her back to April 1st—three days prior to the incident. Realising that she has developed the power to time-travel, she uses her new ability to save her father's life. Unfortunately, her disruption to the timeline causes a chain reaction, with unsettling consequences. Village chief "Ditch", an informant for the ICAC, discovers San Fung's special ability and uses it to investigate corrupted cops, but harbours a secret that bears his true identity. Meanwhile, San Fung discovers that she is not the only person who has developed the ability to travel through time. She learns that her power to change the past does not make her able to control the future.

This series is based on the life of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor who unified China under the Qin dynasty in 221 BC.
