During the Tang era, the two consorts Yang Gui Fei and Mei Fei fought for the favor of Emperor Xuanzong. Desperate to bring down her rival, Yang Gui Fei accused Mei Fei of having an affair with an attendant, Sing Tin, and carrying his child. She stabbed Mei Fei with a hairpin and pushed her into a pond.
