Jung Jae In and her husband separated after his business went bankrupt. She has no other option, but to move back to her hometown in the countryside with her two daughters and live with her father.

Zhang Hanyan, grows up under the adoption of a humble family. Hanyan is actually the youngest daughter of Jinyutang’s CEO, but she was abandoned by her adopted elder sister Liu Caifan, who feared that her position in the family would be affected. Hanyan never thought about searching for her origins, until she meets the rich and handsome Wang Yinan.

The film tells the story of Takata (Takakura Ken), an aging Japanese fisherman who has been estranged from his son for many years. His daughter-in-law Rie summons him to the hospital when his son is diagnosed with terminal cancer, but his son refuses to see him. Rie gives him a videotape of his son's unfinished documentary about the regional Nuo opera of China's Yunnan province. Takata decides to journey to the Chinese region to shoot the film in his son''s stead. He does so with the hopes of connecting to, and understanding, his son. The film's title alludes to a fabled story of Guan Yu's perilous solo journey to reunite with his sworn brother and lord Liu Bei, as told in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It is a story about brotherly love and loyalty celebrated in Chinese folklore and operas. The film draws the parallel between the local folk opera and Takata's quest to fulfill his son's wish.

In the mid-1820s, a natural disaster strikes the city of Nantong, tarnishing most of the city's rice fields. Running out of food supply, city mayor Hong Chi-wing (Wong Wai Leung) decides to use the city's military food supply to feed the people. A few days after the disaster, an official from Beijing arrives to the city to check the military supply. Upon seeing an empty trailer, he sentences the Hong family to death. His daughter Hong Po-yin (Sheren Tang) escapes from punishment and becomes a maid in Prince Wai's mansion, living under the name Hong Po-kei. Twenty years later, Po-kei reunites with the rich rice merchant Chiang Kiu (Elliot Ngok) at his manor in Wuxi, whom she was betrothed to before the disaster, while Prince Wai is there for a visit. Chiang Kiu's wife, Yan Fung-yee (Susan Tse) recognizes Po-kei and reveals her identity to Prince Wai. Kiu manages to convince the Prince to free her, and marries Po-kei as his fourth wife. Hungry for power and eager to keep tradition, Fung-yee finds every opportunity for her son, the eldest child Bit-man (Ngo Ka-nin) to be the only heir of the family business. She tries to strip Po-kei from power even when Chiang Kiu's final will reads that Po-kei should be the full owner of the business. Despite attacks from the family, Po-kei manages to keep the business in good shape. She is impressed with second son Bit-ching's (Ron Ng) intelligence and guides him to become the successor, but her efforts are met with Chai Kau's (Wayne Lai) challenges. Chai Kau seeks vengeance for being mistreated and wants a pay back from Bit-man and the Chiang's family uncle, Pang Hang (Henry Lee). After rounds of battle wits and fights, Po-kei and Chai Kau develop a deep friendship. Chai Kau appreciates Po-kei's work ethics and pledges his loyalty to her. With their excellent cooperation and quick thinking, the business manages to survive through the locusts disasters and the Taiping Rebellion.

Xie Zheng Jie is a senior at Taipei Municipal Li Ren Junior High School. He has to take the national senior high school entrance exams in the near future. One day, a school inspector from Taipei Education Bureau abruptly goes to Li Ren and tells them that there is a report on Mr. Zhan, a math teacher in Li Ren Junior High, who uses the music class period to give students math exams. After hearing receiving this news, Mr. Zhan is very angry. Later, he finds out that those letters were sent by Shen Wei, a student in his class. Hence, Sheng Wei is forced to transfer to another class. The school gives Jay a harsh warning, which is comparable to a three-strikes-your-out type of punishment. Jay and his mother disagree on the warning and this leads to a conflict between Jay's family and the school. At the same time, Jay's parents face the problem of divorce. Jay is also given the elbow by other students. All of these consecutive incidents cause Jay to think of the real meaning in the daily routine-taking tests, going to cram school, studying hard, and what he really needs in his future life

The story recounts the experiences of Zhou Wen, a graduate of Whampoa Military Academy for rich kids. After killing Japanese that was there at that time he was captured and sentenced to death, but due to the fact that his dad has a lot of political power in the area, he was able to escape death and changed his name to Zhou Wei Guo.
