Round One: Tae-shik was once a silver medallist in the Asian Games. Gambling debts and a factory fire have consumed everything he ever owned, leaving him no choice but to work as a street boxer in order to make ends meet. All he has left is his wife and son—and his wife demands a divorce. His son Seo-jin, the only light in his life, will go with her. With his back against the wall and nothing left to lose, an amateur-league bout offers the only hope for the battered boxer. Round Two: Teenager Sang-hwan’s routine of gang fights and muggings is interrupted by a pressing debt. To make the money, he robs a wealthy neighbour—and promptly ends up in a juvenile detention centre. A fight on his first day lands him in solitary confinement. A guard wisely suggests that he direct his violent aggression into boxing, something that gives him, for the first time in his life hope and a sense of direction. But during his sentence, his father dies and his grandmother has a stroke. To overcome his grief, Sang-hwan enters an amateur-league boxing match. Round Three: The preliminaries for the amateur championship begin, and so too does the inevitable clash of Tae-shik and Sang-hwan. Tae-shik’s old skills gradually return as he beats boxer after boxer, while Sang-hwan knocks out every opponent. The two men finally meet at the final match, and they are equally matched. Tae-shik has no place left to go while Sang-hwan is fighting for someone else for the first time in his life. The fight of a lifetime has begun! High school student Ha-Na experiences trouble sleeping after her classmate Jin-A committed suicide. Not being able to sleep, Ha-Na sees her parents fighting. The next day, her parents act like nothing happened the night before. She doesn't like her parents hypocritical behavior. Around this time, Se-Mi, a senior in the band club, approaches Ha-Na. Ha-Na begins to act differently, but she becomes to regret her behavior. A rumor spreads about her and she becomes the target of bullies.

A young black man from Harlem, New York ( Joe Yamanaka ) receives large sum of money, buys himself new clothes and takes a flight to Tokyo. Shortly after arriving he is found fatally stabbed to death in a lift in a hotel at the same time a fashion show is held there by a designer Kyoko Yasugi ( Mariko Okada ). Detective Munesue ( Yusaku Matsuda ) starts to investigate this case which takes him to New York where he teams up with American detective Shuftan ( George kennedy ) to find out more about the dead man.

Among the steady stream of new Chinese movies opening in America, “A Beautiful Life” stands out — rather than an overstuffed, jingoistic historical tale or martial-arts blowout, it’s a contemporary romantic melodrama with a plaintive pop soundtrack that might call to mind “Terms of Endearment,” “The Other Sister” or, most strongly, a Nora Ephron comedy minus most of the laughs. (There’s also a bit of “Memento” thrown in.) It’s no great shakes, but a substantial number of American moviegoers — soft-hearted, slightly masochistic and largely abandoned by Hollywood — would like it if they found their way to it. The first hour, especially, is charming, before the balance shifts from romance to melodrama to, in the final minutes, the kind of maudlin crescendo that Asian audiences are accustomed to. The director, Andrew Lau, gives further proof of his versatility, having already shown that he can make very good gangster movies (“Infernal Affairs”) and so-so kung-fu epics (“Legend of the Fist,” which opened in the United States last month). He practices heroic restraint and delicacy, given the five main characters he’s been handed: one’s blind, one’s autistic, one’s mute, one has early-onset dementia and one’s a healthy, bitter drunk. Mr. Lau is helped by his charismatic stars, Shu Qi and Liu Ye, both of whom are very appealing within the narrow range set for them. Mr. Liu plays an upright cop who’s slowly losing his memory and leaves himself notes to remind him of his daily tasks; Ms. Shu has the Holly Golightly role as a real estate agent trying to strike it rich in Beijing so that she can support her parasitic Hong Kong family. (One not very convincing theme of the film is Beijing incorruptibility versus Hong Kong decadence.) She’s a bit forced and shrill in her drunk scenes, but otherwise she underplays adroitly and flashes some sly humor.

Towako still can't forget Kurosaki, even though they broke up 8 years ago. She now lives with a man named Jinji. Jinji is 15 years older than her. Towako hates Jinji who is poor and vulgar, but she lives with him because of his wage. One day, she meets Mizushima who has a wife and kid. He reminds her of Kurosaki. Soon, she has an affair with Mizushima. A detective visits Towako and tells her that Kurosaki is missing.

Nagase Ren takes on the role of "I," a university student who moved to Tokyo and is living alone for the first time. I has no friends. I has no girlfriend. The lectures at the university were horribly boring, and I was always looking at Tokyo Tower on the way back from his laborious job. While being attracted to the ruthless, dignified and intelligent "Senior," played by Ikeda Elaiza, whom he meets in the "Hide and Seek Circle" that he secretly falls in love with. Meanwhile, I meets a man called "Black Suit," played by Emoto Tasuku, who is an extremely charismatic and mysterious person. Little did "I" know that the two people he met would bring excitement to his mundane, humdrum existence.
