Drawing its inspiration from well-known Chinese Taoist mythology, 8 Avatar employs the latest 3D computer visual effects to depict a fantasy world of mortals battling against deities. This TV series places emphasis on how eight mortal humans from all walks of life become the "Eight Immortals", putting them on a sacred mission to obtain the magic herbs to save the world, during which they have to deal with the vicious East Sea Dragon King blocking their way. During the Tang Dynasty, when land was still undiscovered with just a mass amount of water, and there were outbreaks of incurable diseases. God sent two of his immortals, Tong and Hung, to seek a cure from the Mountain of Medicine. Unfortunately, along the way, they were blocked by the East Sea King and the two immortals had problems getting to the Mountain of Medicine. Just then the apparition of Kwan Yin appeared and she informed the two immortals that in order to defeat the East Sea King, they must locate the other six immortals and battle the East Sea King together. The two immortals then set waves to find the other six disguised immortals amongst the human kind.

The drama follows the story of a man, Choi Suk Bong, who believes that he is actually the son of a rich father and heir to a chaebol group. He meets Lee Shin Mi, who is actually a chaebol heir but acts nothing like one, with her scrimping and frugal ways. Although they get off to a rocky start, with her help, he struggles towards his goal of attaining wealth.

Toko (Fukatsu Eri), decides after she turns 30 that she is all but ready to give up on any future career hopes or romance, so she turns to the bottle for comfort. She knows that this isn't the best thing, but can't find the strength right now to do anything except choose the easy way to do things. This causes her to start getting down on herself. Luckily though, she doesn't give up hope completely, and tries to take things as they come. Which proves to help to some degree. Suddenly one day, a guy by the name of Kotaro (Tsutsumi Shinichi) comes along. Like Toko, Kotaro hasn't had much luck at work either. Even so, this is still the same guy that Toko liked when she was younger. Naturally, Toko is thrilled to see Kotaro after such a long time, but eventually finds out that he is about as insensitive as you can get, and is self-centered to boot. This really gets to Toko. What's worse is that Toko ends up starting a small company with him, even though she had to leave her position at a large company because of trouble they were involved in together.

Usobuki Tadashi is a mysterious man with red eyes. He wears black suits with a wine-red shirt and possesses a special power which will drive people to their death through methods, such as curses and brainwashing. However, it is impossible for his crimes to be proven in court thus Usobuki cannot be taken to justice for the killings he did, on behalf of his clients. Meanwhile, there is Tada Tomoko, a police detective and the only person who cannot be controlled by Usobuki.
