Set in a seaside town, the film consists of three parts that tell the story of three different women, all named Anne and all played by French actress Isabelle Huppert.

It's the wee hours at Wang Wang Supermarket, somewhere in northern China, where nerdy stockroom boy Li Junwei (new teen idol, singer Kimi Qiao) is on duty with -- and only has eyes for -- Tang Xiaolian (Lulu Li, "Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl"wink.gif. But the quiet soon lapses into chaos when balding, pop-eyed He Sanshui (Xu Zheng) comes in with two doofus heavies (Zhao Yingjun, Wang Dongfang) and demands to speak to the mart's boss lady, Wang Sufen (Yang Qing, not the helmer). Turns out the boss -- who's actually off gambling -- was responsible for He's inability to claim the prize on a winning lottery ticket, so he wants 9,500 yuan ($1,400) compensation. When Tang explains the boss isn't around, He & Co. tie Tang up and take over the joint, planning to sell goods until they reach that value. However, business is slow, and as a variety of characters come and go during the night, He turns more desperate. The arrivals of the boss lady and then a gun-toting robber (Zhang Jiayi) only make things worse.

In 1966, a factory employee, Iwao Hakamda was arrested for murdering his boss and his wife and two children. Despite his continuous denial, he eventually confessed under duress and was sentenced to death. The youngest among the three judges, Norimichi Kumamoto convinced he was innocent but his vote was over ruled and the worse, he was tasked to write the verdict. A year later, Kumamoto quit the bench in protest and after 40 years, he broke his silence to denounce the verdict. This is the story about two men who were born in the same year and go through the extreme hardship on the opposite ends of the world. Hakamada is now believed the world longest serving death row inmate.

Ju Yeong is mad at her son's troubles in school, but she realizes that she has little time to spend with him. Su Eun, with a hearing impairment and a burn on her face, falls in her first love but she doesn't have the courage to come out in his presence.

Shama is a fictional place in northwestern China. Legend has it robbers hide many treasures there. To improve the life of the villagers, Tang Gaopeng, the town head, decides to promote Shama as a robber-themed resort. He collects some old items from the villagers and takes them to an antique TV show. To his surprise, the show does not attract any tourists; however it does attract a group of illegal dealers.

She also supports her lazy husband Masaya, who has no qualms about giving her a few slaps, particularly after he loses his job. What chance does this young family have to scrape their way out of the social mire, where they were driven by poverty and the imprudence of youth? How dark does reality have to get before it stifles the rays of hope that filter through? An intimate story that presents a less glitzy picture of Japan than is customary, demonstrating that social inequality impacts all corners of the globe.
