In the early days of the Republic, legendary martial artist Ye Ruzhou suffers a severe injury, losing her memory and winding up in the impoverished alley of Minfu Lane. Kyung Min is an average female living by herself in a studio apartment. When she gets to her place after work, she finds her door lock cover left open. Slightly scared of this, she changes her password. However, just before she goes to sleep, she hears someone trying to unlock her door. Startled by this, Kyung Min calls the police. Yet, the cops only show annoyance and no sympathy towards the frightened Kyung Min. A few days later, she finds more hints of someone trying to enter her home, and a murder incident occurs. Realizing she’s not safe and that the police are not to be trusted, she starts investigating on her own. Au Revoir Taipei is a fun, romantic comedy directed by Arvin Chen (陳駿霖). The story revolves around Kai and Susie. Kai spends long nights in a bookshop studying French in the hope of going to Paris to be with his girlfriend. Susie works in the bookshop and takes an interest in Hong. An ensemble of extra characters are also introduced at the start of the film including two police officers and a gang of four young men aspiring to be gangsters. Kai goes to Bao, a real estate agent who doubles as a gangster, to ask for his help in getting to Paris. Kai is asked to deliver a package in return for the favour which sets up a chase that unfolds over one night in Taipei.

Nomura is a serial killer who views people as targets to kill. Nomura kills a woman in a room. He records the murder and places it on the internet. Bayu works as a journalist in Jakarta, Indonesia. He happens to see the video and becomes attracted to the beauty layered within the cruel visuals. One day, Bay is attacked by a robber. He fights back and kills the robber. Bayu films the robber dying. He places the recording on the internet. Nomura then sees the video recorded by Bayu. Nomura sympathizes with Bayu. A competition takes place.

On the surface, About Her Brother seems very different from Yoji Yamada’s samurai masterpieces that have reached the U.S. in recent years, films like Twilight Samurai and The Hidden Blade. However, consistent with those films, and with Yamada’s service as the regular director of the long-running Tora-san series, About Her Brother is, at heart, a contemplative character study with room for both wry humor and tear-jerking emotion – a gentle portrait of fundamentally decent people under stress. The film follows Ginko, a widowed Tokyo pharmacist dealing with her daughter’s marriage and her ne’er-do-well younger brother Tetsuro, whose drunken antics and stubborn refusal to grow up cause her no end of trouble. The title may be Ototo or “younger brother” in Japanese and Yamada may have packed the cast with ringers - Tsurube Shofukutei (Dear Doctor) as Ginko and Yu Aoi (One Million Yen Girl, Hula Girls) - but the film really belongs to Sayuri Yoshinaga. As Ginko, Yoshinaga simultaneously captures affection, exasperation and embarrassment without ever sliding over the edge into caricature. Rated one of Japan's 10 Best Films of 2010.
