Portrays three people as they live on the islands of Lake Toya in Hokkaido, Hachijojima in Tokyo, and Dojima in Osaka. Maki lives near Lake Toya, and has lived as a "woman" ever since her daughter passed away. Meanwhile, Makoto is a cattle herder living on Hachijojima who is confounded when his daughter comes home pregnant. And, Reiko visits her hometown of Dojima for the funeral of her former boyfriend.

Mishima Kiko was exploited by her own family. When she was little, her mother neglected her. After her mother remarried, Kiko was abused mentally and physically by her mother, stepfather, and younger stepbrother. She didn't belong to this family. Somehow, she disconnects from her family in Tokyo and moves to a seaside town in Oita. There, she meets a 13-year-old boy named Mushi. He has been abused by his mother and does not speak due to trauma from the abuse. Mushi reminds Kiko of herself when she was younger.

Mashiro Shibutani and her family live in Imizu, Toyama Prefecture. With a minor mental disability (that doesn't effect her daily life), she spends her days by tending to her father’s bicycle store and taking care of her pet dog. One day, while visiting a shrine for her older brother's wedding, Mashiro meets photographer Keiichi Yui who came from Tokyo. She accidentally presses the shutter button on his camera, which he left with her for a short while. Keiichi is fascinated by the pictures which Mashiro took on accident. Because of this, they get closer.

Sasaki Kojiro (1585 - April 14, 1612) also known as Ganryu Kojiro) was a prominent Japanese swordsman, born in the Fukui Prefecture. Kojiro's favored weapon during combat was a straight-edged nodachi with a blade-length of over 90 cm (3 feet) long. As a comparison, the average blade-length of the regular katana seldom surpasses 70 cm. It was called the "Monohoshi Zao" (Clothes-Drying Pole, often translated into English as "The Drying Pole" ). Despite the sword's length and weight, Kojiro's strokes with the weapon were unnaturally quick and precise.

Cheol-Min (So Ji-Sub), a man with a dark, mysterious past, picks up a part-time night job as a parking lot attendant. He sits in the tiny pay booth in the parking lot and stares at the small television. A woman named Jung-Hwa (Han Hyo-Joo) walks into the booth. She offers something to Cheol-Min and sits next to him. Cheol-Min realizes the woman is blind and she is confusing him for the parking attendant who worked their previously. Cheol-Min starts becoming attached to the woman. Their past is tied by a life altering incident. One day, Cheol-Min accompanies Jung-Hwa to a musical. Afterwards they have dinner together. Jung-Hwa asks about Cheol-Min's past. Cheol-Min ruthlessly berates Jung-Hwa for asking about his past. Their relationship becomes frozen. Several days later when Jung-Hwa's boss follows her home and tries to sexually assault her Cheol-Min busts through the door. He beats Jung-Hwa's boss savagely and attempts to comfort Jung-Hwa. They move in together and start to live as a couple. But can their happiness last?

The White Lotus Sect convinces the Manchu emperor of China that a jade ring that they had given him is a guarantee that he'll retain the throne, so long as it stays in his possession. Having given the ring to Sum Yu, his fiancée, the emperor sends for her. She is kidnapped by rebel forces, wounded and ends up in the care of Wong Kei-ying and his son, Wong Fei Hung. To save Uncle Yan's shop from being burned down, Sum Yu willingly goes with the troops, uncertain of her fate. Fei Hung, his father and Uncle Yan agree to rescue her.
