Sawako was dumped by her husband and since then she has raised her three sons alone. One day, she happens to meet a young man who is dying. She falls in love with him at first sight. The young man also suffers from memory loss. Sawako names him Hoshio. Taking advantage of his memory loss, she decides to make him live with her as the father of her three sons.

Now, Sawako, her three sons, her grandmother and Hoshio all live together. Sawako hopes Hoshio never regains his memory. Hoshio also begins to develop feelings for her. Whenever Sawako has troubles, Hoshio helps her out with his mysterious ability. Hoshio's past is also mysterious. A mystery that is finally revealed.

Maeng Sun-yi sacrificed her childhood and youth to taking care of her father, who started drinking heavily after her mother abandoned them when she was 10, and her two younger siblings. She even gave up her own education because she had to work hard to earn her siblings' tuitions. She is married to a guy named Ban Sung-moon, her five years junior, and has two daughters with him. Her life continues to present her with endless hardships but she just believes that that is "happiness". One day her husband falls in love with an attractive divorced woman and demands a divorce from Sun-yi. Sun-yi's younger sister, Maeng Young-yi, is a successful career woman. She dates her first love Lee Jung-do, who is now married to another woman and who broke up with her for the sake of his career in the past. Finally, Sun-yi's younger brother, Chul-soo, earns his doctorate degree in the United States and settles down there, completely ignoring his responsibility of taking care of his father. Just to make things worse, Sun-yi is one day diagnosed with cancer, which to her is tantamount to a death sentence. He makes immediate enemies with Hotta when he tells his superiors about her tardiness and attitude. In the following days, he begins to notice something unusual about Hotta, but he can't seem to put his finger on it.

With an odd group of colleagues who live together with him, Ogawa slowly accustoms to life in slow-paced Nara, where there seem to be as many deer as people. Walking through Nara Park one day, he begins to befriend the local deer population, feeding them rice wafers. After being confronted by a talking deer who commandeers him to prevent the destruction of Japan, he fails in his first mission and the talking deer exacts punishment--looking into the mirror the next day, he discovers he has turned into a deer from the shoulders up. Ogawa slowly begins to piece the puzzle together: the talking deer, the mysterious student, and a recent series of earthquakes that could spell doom for Japan...
