Tokino Mitani runs a watch shop, located on a street far from the downtown area. She is 20-years-old and inherited the watch shop from her grandfather. Unknown to most, she is also an excellent private detective and offers an alibi cracking service. She can crack someone's false alibi by using logic based on time and a watch. She gets payed 5,000 yen for that service.

Yoshiyuki Saji used to be an elite police officer, but he tried to uncover corruption within the police department. This caused Yoshiyuki Saji to receive a demotion to a police station in a rural city. He moves alone there, leaving behind his wife and child. He lives at a boarding house, where Tokino Mitani lives. Yoshiyuki Saji does not get along with the other detectives there. He struggles to solve a case and he hears about Tokino Mitani's ability as an alibi cracker. He doesn't want to ask for her help, because of his pride as a police officer, but he requests her help on a case.

Adapted from the popular manga, this drama is set in the town of Higashimikawa in the prefecture of Ehime and is about Kamogawa Yoshiro, an average teenager, with no special talents nor outstanding abilities. Until one day, he could suddenly hear other people's thoughts. He could tell that Hayashi-sensei harbors some ulterior motive when it comes to dealing with the new transfer student, Asami Sae. Yoshiro admires Asami, and thus with his newfound powers, he intends to protect her from Hayashi sensei. With that "I shall protect you" thought, came another, "I shall save the world!". Later that day, at the Cafe where he often hangs out, he realises that his childhood friend, Hirano Miyuki, and the Cafe owner, Nagano Terumitsu, have also acquired new powers. Meanwhile, upon hearing the news of how many townspeople are suddenly acquiring special powers, the mysterious teacher and his assistant decide to move to the town of Higashimikawa...

Sui Tang Yanyi begins in the 580s with the conquest of the Chen dynasty (557-589) by the Sui dynasty under Emperor Wen, and concludes with the return of the Tang dynasty's Emperor Xuanzong to the capital Chang'an in 758 near the end of the An Lushan Rebellion (755-763).

The plot is made up of three main story lines.

The first, with Emperor Yang of Sui and his concubine Zhu Gui'er (朱貴兒) as the central characters, covers the events in the political arena and inner palace in the final years of the Sui dynasty.

The second story line narrates a turbulent period known as the transition from Sui to Tang, when heroes such as Qin Shubao,Shan Xiongxin (單雄信), Cheng Yaojin (程咬金) and Xu Maogong rise up to overthrow the Sui dynasty, followed by stories of how Li Shimin (the future Emperor Taizong of Tang) defeated his rivals and eventually solidified the Tang dynasty's sovereignty over China.

The last story line tells of the romance between Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and Consort Yang, and the events of the An Lushan Rebellion.

The Xiang family and Gong family have a long history of rivalry as fragrance families. Su Family's oldest daughter, Su Yu Ning is the given the title number one Perfumer and is well known not only by her skills in fragrance but also for her beauty. Gong family's successor, Gong Shao Hua and Yu Ning are childhood friends and have an arranged marriage. However, when Shao Hua returns from his studies from Shang Hai, he discovers that Yu Ning and Xiang family's successor, Xiang Hao Yu, are engaged and to be married soon. Not believing Hao Yu's words and Yu Ning's betrayal, the two men have a fight only to be stopped by Hao Yu's father. Angry that his father would break his arranged marriage to Yu Ning, Shao Hua rides away from the scene only to infuriate his father and cause his early death. At his father's funeral, and Yu Ning and Hao Yu's marriage day, he vows to get his revenge on the Xiang family for killing his father and taking away Yu Ning.
