Ching Wai (Chow Yun-fat) is a fresh graduate from university, and is hired by a jewelry company called Yu-Fook, and he rises up the career ladder quickly, due to his superb performance, and he forges a relationship with the Director's daughter, Fong Hei-man (Carol Cheng). The story continues smoothly, until an incident occurs. To pay his mother's (Tang Pik-wan) gambling debts, he embezzles company funds and is reported by the cunning Yuen Kei-cheung (Lee Tao-hung). Ching is sent to prison, where he meets and befriends a gangster chief Lung Koon-sam (Shih Kien), who helps him both in and out of prison. Ching gets a job at another jewelry company, and collaborates with Lung to expose Yuen's wrongdoings. Eventually, Yuen is caught, and Ching proposes to Fong. Ching Chan (Liu Wai-hung), is also another main character. Known as Ah Chan, he is an idle immigrant from the Mainland. He is forced to care for the Chings when Ching Wai is sent to prison. Unfortunately, Ching Chan commits a crime and is jailed, but manages to forge a family with his love Cheung Mei-po (Kong Ho-oi)

In 1988 Hokkaido's Hokusei Yoichi High School became the first high school in Japan to accept students who had previously dropped out of high school from nationwide. Hokkaido Broadcasting (HBC) has been covering this school for 15 years and aired a documentary last spring that caused a stir all over the country. Now TBS in cooperation with HBC will create a drama based on the school. The drama will follow a former gang member, dropout and graduate of the school who returns as a teacher. We will follow him as he helps graduating students out into the world. The teachers and students will, as you would expect, confront all the issues of youth and society today. The King of Yesterday and Tomorrow tells the tale of how Emperor Yung Cheng and Lui Sei Leong are accidentally transported 200 years into the future into modern day Hong Kong. Now, you can just imagine the reactions of these two Ching period characters when they wake up to find themselves in a totally unfamiliar environment. But that’s when we also get to see the differences between Yung Cheng and Lui Sei Leong. Being emperor, Yung Cheng chooses to observe his surroundings and is calm and composed albeit a little apprehensive. Lui Sei Leong, on the other hand, having been brought up with only one thing in mind, is bent on assassinating the emperor and reviving the Ming. She doesn’t care where or what time period she’s in! This, of course, results in a series of hilarious incidents involving the both of them. Yung Cheng assumes the identity of a Lee Tai Ha and is taken in by his uncle and family, while Lui Sei Leong joins a martial arts performing troupe.

During high school, Xia Ming Yue's family was met with misfortune. Her father passed away in an accident, and not long after, her mother became incapacitated by illness.
