In 1976, on the southern island of Yamijima, the sea turns red, a siren begins wailing -- and all but one of the inhabitants disappear. The sole survivor is discovered with his mind gone and his eyes bulging with terror. Twenty-nine years later, Shinichi, a mild-mannered freelance writer, comes to live on the island with his grown daughter, Yuki, and his young son, Hideo. Shinichi hopes that the change of scenery will heal his sickly son. They are greeted on their arrival by the kindly Dr. Minamida, but the other inhabitants stare at them blankly, sullenly. Their house, deep in the forest, has not been inhabited in years -- and looks it. A neighbor lady comes calling and offers Yuki advice with a frazzled urgency: Don't walk alone at night, don't go to the steel tower on the hill -- and if the siren on the tower sounds, don't go outside. Yuki learns that her new home has other . . . peculiarities, including a sinister folk religion, strange graffiti, and an eerie folk song. Meanwhile, Hideo keeps wandering off. Then one day the siren starts wailing . . . and Yuki finds out what all the warnings really mean.

A young man, Yang Han Kook appears at a small Chinese restaurant in decline, Peking Ban Jeum. He is a son of the restaurant president, Han's childhood friends, from China. The president Han made a promise to run one of the best Chinese restaurants with his friend, Han Kook's father, after he learned how to make Jajangmyeon in China. He falls in his old memory, seeing the kitchen knife and a pot of Chinese soybean sauce in Han Kook's hand. Han Kook determines to follow president Han's dream. One day, Han finds that the head cook uses caramel and a chemical seasoning to make Chinese soybean sauce. He is shocked at this fact and is ill in bed. He decides to close his restaurant. Mi Rae, Han's daughter and a manager of the western restaurant, is also in dejection at this news. Han Kook leaves alone in the abandoned restaurant and determines to gather separated employees of the restaurant. They together do their best to restore Peking Ban Jeum. The restaurant gets to be popular again thanks to its delicious Jajangmyeon and other whole-hearted dishes.

In 1999, a robber breaks into a supermarket in small town, killing an elderly woman and running away. The police identify three boys as the culprits and quickly close the investigation. Soon after, Hwang Jun Cheol, who is newly appointed as the chief of the squad, is convinced that Choi Woo Sung, a high-ranking police officer, and his team manipulated the case for a quick result. Hwang attempts a reinvestigation and retrial with his unique persistent and robust investigation capacity.
