The family of Zhu Kai Shan came to Baishan Heishui from their hometown in Shandong because of war and famine. They panned for gold, fell wood, collected ginseng, fought with bandits, officials, and feudalism, and escaped death time and time again; finally, they had their own pastoral fields, but the local tycoons regarded them as "foreigners" and made things difficult for them. After several battles, the Zhu family taught the more advanced farming techniques in Shandong to the local people, and the local people also formed life and death brothers with them; in order to develop, Zhu Kai Shan led the whole family to the city again, but he didn't want to be attacked by "Jehe".

Bei Li Li is a troublemaker who doesn't mean to cause trouble but she makes a mistake at work that costs four of her colleagues their jobs. Her manager Qiao Yi Qiao helps them out and steps up to open a new company. They rent a dingy four-story building where they meet the physically agile yet simple minded Yang Wei. A meshing of six peculiar personalities in the workplace bring about a throng of funny engagements as they work together to establish their careers.

Miki Kakuta (Nana Eikura) graudates from a second-rate university and scores a job at the top company in her field. Miki then becomes an OL (Office Lady), but things turn for the worse for Miki. After a few trivial errors she becomes the target of bullying by her co-workers (even endures a fake webpage made about her). Her immediate boss Yukiko Sano (Yoshino Kimura) gives Miki the cold shoulder, co-worker Marika Tachibana (Anne Watanabe) acts as her friend but makes jokes about her behind her back, senior employee Shota Nakahara (Jun Kaname) seems reliable but Miki realizes that she should keep her distance, and her head boss Seichi Kirino (Naohito Fujiki) is absolutely indifferent to her. Through all of this Miki decides to tough it out and not run away from her job.

The story opens during the last days of the second Shogun, who has two sons, Iemitsu and Tadanaga. Iemitsu is the elder son and is expected to become the next Shogun. However, the real lion's share of the power is held by the Shogun. The Emperor, who belongs to the Noble class must approve the selection of a new Shogun. This rules governing behaviour for the Nobles are distinctly different from the rules for the Samurai. The main goal of the Nobles is to restore the true governing power to Japan to the Emperor.
