In China, Xuie lives an impoverished life with her father who is far from helpful. She is living in Chongqing, the city of 40 million people. She works as a teacher, teaching Mandarin to foreigners. Even though she is from Chongqing, she doesn't speak in Chongqing dialect, rather talking in Mandarin which is the standard language of mainland China. One day, her father gets arressted because of prostitution and she is called to the police. One policeman comes closer to her and her mind is taken by him. In the crowded and busy streets of industrial developing city, Chongqing, Xuie dreams to escape from her painful and hopeless life.

Based on a manga written by Tatsuhiko Yamagami, the story is set in a former seaport town Uobuka, where 6 former criminals were sent to live there by the government, with the intention of re-socialising them. Aside from the few who know about the project, the general townsfolk has no idea of the former convicts' identities. Tsukisue is the pleasant and efficient municipal official put in charge of the programme. As he slowly learns about their past, a body is discovered.

Because of this, Satoko's relationship with her family and friends becomes strained. One day, Satoko meets a woman, Maki, on the street and gets close to her.

Superstar Hasegawa Kazuo leads the cast as Hirate Musashi while a young Ichikawa Raizo competes with him as Okamoto Musashi. They must not only contend with the Yoshioka and Yagyu fencing schools, but have to take on Katsu Shintaro as Sasaki Kojiro, and deal with the women who pursue them for love. Unlike the Yoshikawa Eiji novel which is not historically accurate, this film offers a new view of Japan’s greatest hero!

Radically rethinking the tired talking-heads template, Tsai Ming-liang's latest digital experiment turns the human face into a subject of dramatic intrigue. Comprised of a series of portrait shots of mostly anonymous individuals (Tsai devotees will no doubt recognize his long-time muse, Lee Kang-sheng), the film shrewdly deemphasizes language while reducing context to a bare minimum. In their place, the beauty and imperfections of each face take center stage. Accompanied by Ryuichi Sakamoto's soundtrack of dynamically modulating drone frequencies, Tsai's subjects variously speak, stare, and, at one point, sleep as the camera quietly registers the weight of personal history and accumulated experience writ beautifully across every last pore and crevasse.
