The dead body of a young woman is discovered in a park right in front of Kasugano Police Precinct in the heart of Tokyo. All her organs have been taken out. While a investigation task force is being set up, ace detective Inukai Hayato of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's First Investigative Division starts to investigate together with a rookie detective from Saitama Prefectural Police, Kotegawa Kazuya, who has just come to the division for training. The brutal way in which victim was murdered discomforts Inukai. He is never swayed by his own feelings and is feared for seeing through the lies of others. The divorced Inukai has a daughter of elementary school-going age, Toyosaki Sayaka. She is suffering from a serious kidney disease and is waiting for a transplant. Early surgery is encouraged by her attending physician, Majikina Takahiko and Majikina's wife and anesthetist, Yoko. Takano Chiharu is introduced as the university hospital's transplant coordinator in charge of Sayaka. Meanwhile, a statement which seems to ridicule the bewildered task force, is sent to a TV station by the criminal who calls himself ‘Jack the Ripper’. The words “I'm enjoying this work” are written down. Then second and third crimes occur in the same way. It starts to seem similar to theatrical crime. Before long, Inukai and Kotegawa discover what the victims have in common. The victims had received organ donations from the same donor. Inukai is caught between his roles as a detective and a father, but begins to track down the criminal. An entertaining police thriller about executive-level cops and corruption that derails when it gets didactic and pretentious. Awesome production values and decent performances don't fully offset the one-note, self-important execution by writer-directors Longman Leung and Sunny Luk.

How do you put together the puzzle if the image is missing? You start from individual pieces and see how they fit together. There are the four young actors on a trip to Kanchanaburi, “a city so meaningful, I’d rather die if I don’t get to be with you”, as the song goes. They stay in a hut in the forest by the river, drink on the terrace, talk and watch the fireworks at night, the same scene they later re-enact on the stage set back in Bangkok. The harried young woman is lost in the same forest, or maybe in the young actress’ dream; when the screen splits into two distinct parts, it’s also not clear how they fit together. The foursome came to Kanchanaburi to see the museum, but it’s closed for refurbishment, although they still manage to walk along Hellfire Pass. You can hear the sounds of construction as the scenery rushes past on the train; you can see the rails rush towards you from the window of the theatre set. If you follow the Death Railway back from the west, you reach Bangkok too, which was once home to the Dusit Zoo; the actors also cluck, howl and bark, in city and country alike. What if the missing image isn’t one place or moment in time, but many?
