Life Is Beautiful is a story about tracing one’s first love and finding real love in the process. It follows the story of Oh Se Yeon, a devoted wife to her husband Jin Bong and a doting mother to their children.

She suddenly learns that she no longer has much time left to live. As if trying to complete a puzzle in her life, she makes a strange request to her husband to help her find her first love. Although reluctant at first, Jin Bong finally gives in to his wife’s absurd final wish.

Together, they embark on a journey to search for Se Yeon’s first love. However, the only information Se Yeon has is his name. Their trip turns out to be a bittersweet journey which allowed them to recall their precious moments in the past and to create fresh memories to keep.

A struggling rickshaw driver’s life takes a rollicking turn when he comes upon an expensive camera and decides to make a film with his fellow villagers.

The film begins with escaping prisoners Funky (Simon Yam), Calf (Andy On), Hung (Ken Lo), Kong (Xiong Xin Xin) and Andy Lok (Cheung Siu-fai) on the run from several People's Armed Police officers somewhere in China. Though Funky and his crew manage to fight off the guards, he and Andy Lok the crime boss of their gang get separated with the others while protecting something very valuable to Mr Lok's company. As the others reach their escape meeting an elderly gang ally named Zen, they realize Funky and Andy Lok are still trying to catch up. Just as Andy Lok tries to make a last-ditch attempt to escape he is hit by a truck which was actually part of a trap by the PAP officers and is captured, while Funky hides in the bushes apparently foreseeing it coming. Sometime later, Andy Lok's sister Audrey Lok (Bernice Liu) is sitting in silence at a public execution. Just as the PAP officers execute one man, Andy Lok's weeps once last time before being executed by an officers AK-47. Audrey prompts leaves the execution site and meetings with her will bearer Peter Wong (Lam Suet) who discusses her brother's will. As Audrey Lok tries to settle her brother's will at her house. It becomes evidently that her brother's co-workers only want her money and her brother's power and soon mysterious conspiracies leading to murder schemes begin to follow. Audrey realizes what she wants and becomes a great fighter. She fights and kills, striving only to be triad leader. Death and killings follow. At the end, the will reveals that Audrey and her brother's father wanted his children to leave Hong Kong and have a better life while the gang leadership will go to the co-workers. However, Audrey got greedy, she betrayed her brother and everyone. At the end, after she killed everyone, Dumby, Calf's student, Dumby fights Audrey when Audrey murdered Calf. Audrey shoots Dumby so many times until Dumby kills Audrey with a grenade. Both of them died in the explosion.

Saigo Ryusuke, who was born and raised in a coastal town in Tohoku, becomes the manager of the branch office of a local credit union. He builds a modest house on a small hill overlooking the sea and lives happily with his beautiful wife Asako, mother Nami and daughter Chiaki who works at the city hall. On one of Ryusuke’s days off work, the Saigos head to the house of Chiaki’s boyfriend Hamaguchi Shuichi for the first meeting between both sets of parents. The Hamaguchis have been fishermen for generations. There is Shuichi’s taciturn father Katsumi, mother Masayo, grandfather Kichiya, grandmother Iku and younger brother Mitsuhiko. Chiaki, who dreams of being active in national politics someday in the future, has given this condition in her marriage to Shuichi. Ryusuke and his wife have mixed feelings about their daughter’s marriage to a fisherman’s family, but it is also the same with the Hamaguchis. However, Chiaki and Shuichi are firm in their decision to marry and both families consent to their children’s marriage. At a dinner party, Ryusuke and Katsumi both realize that they are junior high school classmates. However, five days later on 11 March 2011, an earthquake and tsunami strikes eastern Japan and the destinies of the two families are drastically changed. The tsunami claims the lives of Masayo, Iku and Shuichi. The Hamaguchis also lose both house and boat. On the other hand, the Saigos escape harm because their house is on high ground. Chiaki is swamped with work to the extent that she has no interlude to feel sad over the loss of her fiance. Wanting to be of help to the Hamaguchis, Ryusuke and Asako make an offer to them to stay in their house. However, on the night of the visit of Katsumi, Kichiya and Mitsuhiko to the Saigos, havoc ensues.

A star, Miyuki Goto (Ko Shibasaki) plays Oiwa, the protagonist in a new play based on the ghost story Yotsuya Kaidan. She pulls some strings to get her lover, Kosuke Hasegawa (Ebizo Ichikawa) cast in the play, even though he's a relatively unknown actor. Other performers Rio Asahina (Miho Nakanishi) and Jun Suzuki (Hideaki Ito) lust after Miyuki. Off stage the cast's possessive love and obsessions exist as reality. Trapped between the play and reality, the cast's feelings for each other are amplified.
