In the forgotten town of Cupang in the Philippines, a young woman named Elsa announces that she has seen the Virgin Mary -- and then demonstrates a new-found ability to heal the sick. Soon the whole village has become the center of international attention as people come from all over for statues of the saints and bottles of the village's holy water. Among the hordes of visitors is a skeptical film director intent on visually recording Elsa's healing powers -- and without his knowing it, some frames capture a secret Elsa has kept from the world for a long time, a secret which led to her sister's suicide. The film is both philosophical and political. The filmmaker seems to have been set up as a representation of the artist who believes his art is a simple transcript of reality and finds himself confounded by the morality of condoning “untruth” by his failure to expose the outrage on the “miracle-maker.” The political aspect, in retrospect, is a damning comment on the deceptions being foisted by the Marcos dictatorship on the Filipino -- the fiction that Martial law had brought about the “miracle” of eradicating poverty and unrest in Philippine society. The film tells the story of the romance between a boy named Tiedan who falls in love with his neighbor Meijie, a married woman. But Meijie leaves the place where they used to live as the Cultural Revolution hits them. Ten years later, Tiedan grows into a man and Meijie comes back to their hometown with three daughters. It is apparent that Tiedan was unable to forget Meijie and he falls in love with her eldest daughter; however, he ultimately ends up with nothing. Tiedan is forced into marrying Meijie's second oldest daughter instead. He decides to lead a vagrant life with a drama troupe, accompanied by Meijie's third daughter.

On his wedding anniversary, Han Chul-min (Jang Hyuk) drives into his apartment complex parking lot and sees a large crowd gathered by the entryway into his apartment. He enters holding a bouquet of flowers for his wife, instead he finds police officers scattered about collecting evidence. In his bedroom there is a large pool of blood dripping onto the floor from the bed, and his wife is nowhere to be seen. Han is then handcuffed, arrested and taken into police custody for her murder. Prosecutor Ahn Min-ho (Park Hee-soon) takes charge of prosecuting the Han murder case. He has little doubt in the guilt of Chul-min. Confirming his suspicions that Han was arrested as the prime suspect in a serial murder case, but later released on insufficient evidence. Jang Ho-won (Sung Dong-il), an investigator, brings the case of Han to defense lawyer Kang Sung-hee (Ha Jung-woo). He informs Kang that the alleged murder victim's body was never discovered, the police have yet to find any direct evidence connecting Han to the murder of his wife and his arrest is based on circumstantial evidence. Han, who works at a film laboratory, has no fingerprints as they are erased from the strong chemicals he handles everyday. Convinced that Han is not guilty, Kang takes the case and applies in court for a jury trial and goes through a series of legal clashes against rival prosecutor Ahn. The case gets even more complex as details about the mysterious life of Han's wife are unveiled.
