    Suzhou River (2000)

    Suzhou River
    Genre:
    Drama, Romance
    Country:
    Chinese
The river Suzhou that flows through Shanghai is a reservoir of filth, chaos and poverty, but also a meeting place for memories and secrets. Lou Ye, who spent his youth on the banks of the Suzhou, shows the river as a Chinese Styx, in which forgotten stories and mysteries come together. Mardar, a motorcycle courier in his mid-twenties, rides all over the city with all kinds of packages for his clients. He knows every inch and is successful thanks to the fact that he never asks questions. One day he is asked by a shady alcohol smuggler to deliver his sixteen-year-old daughter, Moudan, to her aunt. Mardar and Moudan grow fond of each other. But their tender happiness is disrupted when Moudan thinks that Mardar has kidnapped her for a ransom. She is so disappointed in him that she jumps off the bridge into the Suzhou River. Mardar is now suspected of murder. When a couple of years later he comes out of jail, he meets the dancer Meimei, an alter-ego of Moudan, and becomes fascinated by her. Beautifully written and engaging story of romance and determination. Not your average Chinese made film which saw this film banned in China. This is the version as the director intended it to be.

The Cloud in Her Room (2020) (2020)

The Cloud in Her Room (2020)
    Genre:
    Drama
    Country:
    Chinese

Mu Zi's parents' old apartment is still there. A bed, an abandoned chair, a window falling off its hinges – the remnants of a relationship that has moved on. Her father has started a new family, her mother has friends abroad; it seems like only Mu Zi cares about this place. In The Cloud in Her Room, she wanders several times through this static past.

In her palpably personal debut film, Chinese filmmaker Zheng Lu Xinyuan follows her 22-year-old protagonist as she returns to Hangzhou, where she was born, for the New Year's celebration. She arranges to meet old friends, makes some new ones and visits her parents, with whom she is mostly on friendly terms. It's like she doesn't really fit in anywhere. Mu Zi is living in limbo: like the apartment, she has stopped, caught between past and future.

Zheng Lu, who shot her film in black-and-white, underlines Mu Zi's alienation through directorial decisions that are at times daring. She combines handheld documentary footage, in which Mu Zi interviews people around her, with more distant camerawork. As a child of separated parents, born at the time of the one child policy and having grown up in a China where everything is changing at breakneck speed, Zheng Lu has made a melancholy, topical film about her generation and the society in which they are growing up. At the same time, it is a universal story about love, relationships, the impossibility of keeping these going and the loneliness this causes.

    Nougyou Joshi Harapeko SP
    Genre:
    Drama
    Country:
    Japanese
It is winter, the off-season for farming, and a matchmaking party is organised in Asahikawa. The girls, who have dressed up and gathered there from various parts of Hokkaido, are the successors of farming businesses. A significant other is crucial for succession and they are hunting for husbands. The group “Harapeko” has planned this party. Their leader is 29-year-old Hirose Natsumi (Maeda Aki), the only daughter of a farming family in the town of Kami Furano. She has been making a great effort as the successor of her father Yukio (Kariya Shunsuke). However, he does not recognise her attempts and is opposed to her following in his footsteps. Agriculture in Hokkaido is several orders of magnitude larger in scale than Honshu, so it is difficult to manage. He also considers her unsuitable because she has less physical strength than a young man and is not good at handling machinery. On the other hand, Natsumi’s good friend and the Harapeko’s sub-leader Sawaki Yuka (Serina) also stands at a crossroad in life. Should she pick farming or her boyfriend Imai Shota (Kokubo Toshihito)? Inheriting the family business is not an easy matter for the daughters of Hokkaido farming families. These girls venture into selling freshly harvested vegetables directly and nutrition education events with their energy. They even participate in the Tractor Bamba Race at Tokachi’s Sarabetsu Village and begin to realise what the possibilities of agriculture are to them. Will they be recognised as successors and also get husbands?

    Candy Rain (2008)

    Candy Rain
    Genre:
    Romance, Lesbian
    Country:
    Taiwanese
Director Chen Hung-I's Candy Rain could be the most perfectly titled film ever. Like candy, the film is sweet and tasty in small doses. However, too much is probably bad for you, and prolonged exposure would definitely lead to cavities. Also, the film's obvious meaning falls unavoidably like rain, and even an umbrella won't fully protect you. The best thing: staying indoors and avoiding it entirely. And it's time to stop the cheesy metaphors because they're strained and more than a little annoying. Oddly, "strained and more than a little annoying" could apply to Candy Rain too. Funny how that works out. An omnibus film about four lesbian relationships, Candy Rain leads off with a tale of two old friends (Grace Chen and Belle Hsin), who are tested by their burgeoning lesbian relationship. They sleep together and bask in each other's company, but minor differences get in the way of a smooth ride to happily ever after, leading to an inevitable break up and a possible make up. Story two centers on an OCD-suffering introvert (Sandrine Pinna) who works as a chef and meets possible partners online. Her new girl is a forward older woman (Waa, doing her best Bai Ling impression), and the two manage some semblance of relationship progression before clashing personalities - and one partner's irrational need for loneliness - gets in the way of extended bliss.
