Yiu Hok Sum is detective who is skilled in reading human body language, especially of people who try to deceive him. With his knowledge of criminal psychology, he is able to solve cases by paying close attention to the behavior and reactions of witnesses, with the help of his team. However, his relationship with his stepfather's side of the family is strained since his mother is looked down upon as a gold-digger, who married shortly after her Yiu Hok Sum, as a young child, witnessed the death of his father.

The Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre takes place during 14th Century China during the Mongolian Yuan Dynasty, roughly 100 years after the events of Return of the Condor Heroes. This well known legend in the Martial Arts community is the impetus for the tale of Zhang Wuji. The story begins with how his parents met (episodes 1-3), then tells his trials as an adolescent (episodes 4-8), proceeds to relate his rise to prominence (episodes 9-23) and reveals the secret behind Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre (episode 23), and ends with the confluence of Wuji's love life, the Martial Arts sects' long standing grudges, and cruel fate.

Ten years back, Miwa's friend committed suicide because she couldn't stand that Yosuke, the one she loved, got along so well with Miwa instead of her. The suicide caused the entire town to put the blame on the couple, thus forcing them to break off. Ten years later, Miwa and Yosuke happen to meet again. Though the love between them still exists, the reality makes their being together impossible. The drama mainly tells the story of Gu Nuan, an illegitimate daughter of the Gu family, who found out that her boyfriend had cheated on her sister Gu Ling. Her mother was pushed down the stairs by Gu's father and wanted to murder, so she vowed to take back everything that belonged to her. Zhen appears and wants to contract with Gu Nuan to marry. It seems that Gu Nuan wants to take revenge, but Wen Ren Zhen actually hides a secret.
