What makes them tick? The four main characters from the popular 2016 Chinese television drama “The Mystic Nine” have gone through other experiences in their lives that have shaped the people they have become. These are their stories. In the “Hidden Dragons Underneath the Stage,” Er Yue Hong (Zhang Yi Xing) goes undercover as an opera singer to retrieve a cultural relic that is buried beneath an ancient tomb during the Sino-Japanese era. In the “Murders in the Xie Mansion,” Xie Jiu Ye (Yang Zi Jiang) investigates the mysterious deaths of several members of his household. In the “Phantom of Bifang Buckle,” Huo San Niang (Wang Mei Ren) must find his way out of a temple filled with poisonous gas that sparks a killing spree. In the “Slaughter of Abelmosk Gang,” Chen Pi A Si (Hu Yun Hao) starts his career as a hired killer when a little boy asks him to kill his family’s murderer.

Takano Tsumeko carries herself confidently and speaks with a calm voice. Even though she appears very competent, which helped her pass her job interview at her current company with ease, she is shockingly incompetent. She doesn't know how to turn on a computer or use a copier machine. When it comes to negotiating with clients, her aura of competence allows her to gain their trust and close contracts one after the other. Meanwhile, Hiwada Michito is a rookie employee who joined the company at the same time as Takano Tsumeko. Unlike Takano Tsumeko, Hiwada Michito is actually good at his job but he appears to be incompetent. He is forced to team up with Takano Tsumeko.

Tianji Tower, the leading organisation of the pugilistic world (jianghu) is determined to overthrow Liu Ziye, the tyrannical ruler of the Liu Song dynasty. To achieve their mission, Tianji Tower replaces his sister Liu Chuyu with their own disciple and Princess-lookalike Zhu Que. Zhu Que meets the Princess’ learned companion Rong Zhi, who turns out to be a spy from Northern Wei. Liu Chuyu and Rong Zhi’s relationship eventually breaks down overmisunderstandings and differing loyalties, and the latter fakes his death in order to regain Chuyu’s forgiveness. During the war between Wei and Shu, the Shu defeated the Wei using the crossbows they make. In order to attain this powerful weapon, the Wei sent numerous spies to infiltrate the Shu kingdom and steal it. Chen Gong and Xun Xu are Shu spies who have infiltrated Wei kingdom for many years. After knowing the plan of Wei, they decided to work separately to stop it. Chen Gong continued to stay in Wei kingdom, while Xun Xu went back to Shu kingdom to investigate. In the midst of investigation, Xun Xu finds out the thief of the crossbows - Mei Chong. He also discovers a highly skilled spy named Zhu Long who is ambushed in Shu kingdom, who is waiting for the opportunity to initiate the Qing Ping plan. Xun Xu devised a scheme to hook Mei Chong, using it as an opportunity to destroy the spy network in Shu kingdom.

Despite eventually capturing Gao Chengtang, a corrupted officer, the real Zhu Long is actually someone else. Chen Gong also ends his spy career in Wei kingdom, and goes back to Shu kingdom. Together, Xun Xu and Cheng Gong investigates the Zhu Long incident and discovers the truth behind the Qing Ping plan.
