    The Grand Canal features popular stars now and then to celebrate TVB's 20th Anniversary in 1987. The story originates from well-known historical figures in China during the Sui Dynasty. The TV drama covers different historical events such as the peasant uprising leading to the downfall of the Sui Dynasty, the rise of the Tang Dynasty and the politics involved therein. Tony Leung and Felix Wong, two of the legendary "Five Tigers", led the cast, and this is one of the very few dramas in which Felix Wong plays the villain, Li Mi. The righteous and intelligent hero Zhang San-lang, played by Tony Leung, is exactly the opposite of the cunning and ambitious Li Mi. The two struggle with each other to offer TV fans an exciting 58-episode series! A lot of viewers also find the subplots alluring. Zhang San-lang (Tony Leung) falls in love with a princess (Idy Chan), while another girl (Cheng Yim Fung) is having a crush on him. The love relations among members of the side-cast also create great attraction. The strong casts, their wonderful chemistry, the beautiful costumes and sets, together with the impressive scenic views in Xi'an (the former capital of China) all won big applause from the audience. The TV series also features other famous artists such as Idy Chan, Margie Tsang, Sean Lau Ching Wan, Lawrence Ng, Chan Sau Chu, Liu Kai Chi, etc. Also starring Wong Yee Gum and Cheng Yim Fung who were the winners of the one-time Miss TV pageant.

    Kwanjit is a singer in a restaurant, she falls in love with an American doctor. He promises to marry her and goes home to tell his relatives, but he never comes back. Twenty years go by and Rainie is now a young girl with curly hair and dark skin. Rainie lives in a small flat with her mother. Once Rainie finishes high school she becomes a delivery girl for her mother's papaya salad business. Rainie is often bullied and made fun of because of her dark skin. She is very interested in celebrities, especially Traikhun, the heir of an advertising company. Traikhun is dating May, a beautiful and famous actress. But Siam, his grandfather, doesn't accept it and demands that his grandson must marry the person he chose. Rainie gets a job as a singer at Angel Pub. While singing, she sees Traikhun drinking and waits until the pub closes to see if he's still there, but a drunk foreigner tries to rape her. She removes her high heel and attempts to hit the foreigner, but accidentally hits Traikhun. He insults her and she insults him back. Then he suddenly has an idea. The next day, Rainie brings fruits to Traikhun's company and he announces that she is his new girlfriend. However, Siam doesn't believe him and after talking with Rainie, he quickly learns the truth. He hires her to ruin the relationship between Traikhun and May. Rainie doesn't want to take a guy away from May, whom she admires, but her mother gets sick and needs an expensive operation. She agrees and Siam arranges it. Rainie gradually begins to have feelings for Traikhun, but Risa - the girl whom the grandfather chose to marry Traikhun - comes back to Thailand.

    Rinka (Nao Matsushita) lost her parents 13 years ago in an accident. Since then, she has lived with her grandmother. Her grandmother is then diagnosed with stomach cancer and becomes hospitalized. Making things worse for Rinka, the English institute where she works goes bankrupt. Paying for her grandmother's surgery seems nearly impossible.

    Rinka then thinks of K. K sends a bouquet of flowers every year. Rinka thinks if she can find K, that person might help her. But who is K? Rinka asks her grandmother about K, but her grandmother doesn't say anything. Rinka then sends a letter to K and, later, a man who identifies himself as K's secretary appears in front of her. Rinka tries to find out K's identity and why he keeps sending flowers.

    Miyuki (Miki Nakatani) married Kazuya 3 years ago. Kazuya worked for her uncle's company. The only thing Miyuki worries about is that they don't have children yet.

    Kazuya's dream was to become an architect, but he now works in the sales department for an architect firm run by his wife's cousin Yosuke. Kazuya then participates in a competition to design an art gallery. Kazuya wins the competition, but Yosuke placed his name on Kazuya's design.

    After Miyuki complains to Yosuke about his actions, Kazuya tells her something that has been on his mind. This causes tragedy.

    University student Satsuki (Erika Toda) joins a climbing club with her friend Kimiko. Satsuki falls in love with Koichi who is in the same club. When Satsuki views Kocihi as part of her fate, Kurata, from the climbing club, collapses from leukemia.

    Satsuki and Koichi take a test of their white blood cells. Satsuki finds out that she has the same white blood cell forms as Kocihi. A shocking hidden truth is reveled.

    Shinsuke Kuwano (Abe Hiroshi), a successful architect at 40, enjoys living by himself. He doesn't like people but somehow is able to design wonderful houses for them.

    He has a routine of making himself a delicious dinner and then relaxing to classical music in his easy chair. (He likes to pretend he is the conductor.) One night, he plays the music loud enough to make his next door neighbor, Michiru Tamara (Kuninaka Ryoko) knock on his door to complain. When Kuwano answers the door, he suffers a terrible stomach pain and collapses to the floor. Lucky for him, his neighbor Michiru is nice enough to accompany him to the hospital, where he is treated by Dr. Natsumi Hayasake (Natsukawa Yui). He is really rude to Natsumi, but she is still determined to treat him.

    Afterwards, Michiru and Natsumi become part of Kuwano's life. They make friends with Kuwano's colleagues Eiji (Tsukamoto Takashi) and Maya Sawazaki (Takashima Reiko). They all enjoy talking about how strange and eccentric Kuwano is. Is it possible that someone would ever want to marry him?
