A Communist spy serving as an officer of the Japanese puppet regime joins hands with Russian and Korean spies to execute an assassination plot.

In the year 1941, Nazi Germany declares war against the Soviet Union. Given that Manchukuo's loyalties lie with Cheng Tian, the Russians are caught in a situation where they face threats on all sides. Their intelligence agency devises a long-term plan in secret. Communist spy Tang Fei (Liu Yunlong) receives a mission to infiltrate the enemy by pretending to be one of their own. At the Security Bureau, he crosses paths with Cai Meng (Han Chae Young), a woman determined to fight against the Japanese regime. They gain each other's trust as they try to outsmart the enemy within their own territory.

Yosuke Tomikawa (Tomokazu Miura) is married to Mizuki (Hitomi Kuroki). They have a daughter, Shiori (Atsuko Maeda), and son, Ko (Asuka Kudo). Yosuke works as the general manager in the personnel department at a large company. His wife works as a teacher at a private middle school. Their daughter works as a jewelry maker and their son is looking for a job. The family appears to look like a peaceful family, but, due to an accidental opportunity, the family begins to collapse.

The film tells the story of Takata (Takakura Ken), an aging Japanese fisherman who has been estranged from his son for many years. His daughter-in-law Rie summons him to the hospital when his son is diagnosed with terminal cancer, but his son refuses to see him. Rie gives him a videotape of his son's unfinished documentary about the regional Nuo opera of China's Yunnan province. Takata decides to journey to the Chinese region to shoot the film in his son''s stead. He does so with the hopes of connecting to, and understanding, his son. The film's title alludes to a fabled story of Guan Yu's perilous solo journey to reunite with his sworn brother and lord Liu Bei, as told in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It is a story about brotherly love and loyalty celebrated in Chinese folklore and operas. The film draws the parallel between the local folk opera and Takata's quest to fulfill his son's wish.

Sun Zhen is an author, whose life hasn't been going so smoothly. Her novel which she has spent many years in writing didn't get approved by the publication office and she also got dismissed from her part-time job as a private tutor. That led her to not having any money to pay for her rent. Sun Zhen is someone who doesn't like following the trend, as she thinks it is very superficial. She has a younger brother Sun Ping that she has to take care of so although she dislikes the work by author X she still forged the identity of X. She later got unconsciously attracted by Xiao An, who works at the publication office. Sun Zhen has a boyfriend of 2 years Wei You Liang who is a news reporter. They were planning to get engaged and to him his girlfriend is his driving power in life. After Sun Zhen started to use X's identity their relationship went downhill.
