The Family Game was originally an award winning novel by Honma Yohei that was adapted for television drama and film. 30 years later, the story returns to the screen again on Fuji TV, Wednesday nights. Sakurai Sho stars in this troubling drama as the private tutor Yoshimoto Koya. Koya becomes a tutor to a student, Numata Shigeyuki, an underachiever on the verge of dropping out of middle school. Expecting immediate results, Shigeyuki’s father makes a deal with Koya that if he could make Shigeyuki return to school within a week, he would receive a 100,000 yen bonus. Koya accepts the offer, replying that he would only need 5 days to complete the mission but demands that no one should interfere with his methodology in doing so. A handsome face with a reckless mouth, Koya is a wacky unpredictable pro tutor. How will he save Shigeyuki, a boy who has been bullied in school, betrayed by his best friend, and become a shut-in at home? How will he educate Shigeyuki to change his ways? The scientific criminal investigation team, White Lab, is a new unit established within the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s First Investigative Division because of the need to swiftly capture criminals of violent crimes with hard evidence. It possesses the knowledge of the crime lab and the investigative authority of First Investigative Division. The core members of the White Lab are former scientist Ichinose Satoshi (Kitamura Kazuki) who solves difficult cases with unique investigation methods; Honda Masayuki (Tanihara Shosuke) who goes by the nickname “human lie detector”; and former crime lab ace Okunuki Toru (Miyasako Hiroyuki). Each of them have different personalities as well as areas of speciality, but respect each other and work together to crack cases.

29-year-old Kuroki Sayaka is a writer working for a magazine at a publishing company. She's engaged to her long-term boyfriend and will have her wedding in three months, so resigns from her job. But that night, she discovers that her fiance Kazuya, who was her first love from high school, has actually been cheating on her. When she confronts him, he breaks off the engagement saying he felt pressured by her to get married.

Broke from all the wedding expenses, Sayaka tries to return to her old job only to find out she's already been replaced. Her boss feels bad for her, though, so he finds a way for her to get reinstated in the company with a much higher caliber fashion magazine. However, there's a catch: according to her eccentric new boss Usami, Sayaka must meet his strange conditions. She must find a better man to marry within six months, and as embarrassed as she is, she must write an ongoing column about her experience, from broken engagement to wedding. But first, Sayaka has to figure out why she doesn't value herself enough to believe it's possible.
