The same suspect was then released due to a lack of evidence for the most recent murder case. The released man returned to his town, where everybody hated him. On the day of the autumn festival parade, the man was killed.

Shinichi Sakurai (Sadao Abe) is married to Kanako (Kyoko Fukada) and they have a daughter named Kaori (Mikuu Yamada). Both, Shinichi and Kanako received only a middle school level education. Even though they don't have much money, they are a happy family. At work though, Shinichi experiences effects of only having a middle school education.

One day, Shinichi sees Kaori’s poor score for a national test. He freaks out and decides to improve Kaori's education. Thus, 41-year-old Shinichi begins studying with Kaori and instructs her for the upcoming middle school entrance exam.

16 years ago, there was an occurrence of zombies in western Mexico. They rapidly spread around the world through the transmission of a virus. Ryujo Hoshiko comes to detective Kindaichi Kosuke’s office with a request. She would like him to investigate an attempt to poison her father, Baron Ryujo Kiyohisa. Hoshiko says this may have something to do with the issues of succession such as the peerage and fortune. Accepting the request, Kindaichi and Hoshiko are driven by a servant of the Ryujo family to the mansion in Nagano Prefecture. On the way, the car comes to an abrupt halt on a country road. They have stumbled across the dead body of Kazuma, the husband of eldest daughter Ryujo Hanayo. After assisting with the investigation, Kindaichi and Hoshiko finally reach the mansion. The police detective Hibino is questioning a grieving Hanayo, her mother Shimako, second daughter Yukiya and her husband Hoshino Natsuhiko. Then another man arrives. It is Akechi Kogoro. He received a warning from the 20-Face Phantom who is targeting the golden statute of a Buddhist deity which is in the Ryujo’s possession. Kindaichi and Akechi end up face to face again. Kindaichi is conscious of it, but Akechi acts relaxed. From the next day, Kindaichi searches for clues in the murder. On the other hand, Akechi pursues the whereabouts of the Phantom. Kazuma, who had been the possible successor of the peerage, had no reason to commit suicide. Everyone in the family believe he was murdered. In a search after that, it is discovered from a storehouse within the mansion that Kazuma vomited blood. There is a high chance it is the same poison administered to the baron. Meanwhile, Shimako has been hastening a proposal of marriage for her third daughter Hoshiko. The other party is Takuzo of Hishikawa Construction. Hoshiko makes an agonising decision in order to protect her family. And then, another incident occurs in the Ryujo family.

Since her father died, Mugiko (Maki Horikita) lives with her older brother (Ryuhei Matsuda). Her mother Ayako (Kimiko Yo) left home when Mugiko was little. Mugiko has not heard from her mother since that time. But one day, her mother Ayako comes back. Mugiko has mixed feelings with her mother's sudden appearance again, while Ayako hides the fact that she is gravely ill.

Hanzawa Naoki works for Tokyo Chuo Bank as the head of the Loans Division at their Osaka Nishi branch. The overbearing branch manager, Asano, forces him to award an unsecured loan of 500 million yen to Nishi Osaka Steel. On the surface, Nishi Osaka Steel seems like a very reputable company, but in actual fact it is a company in deep trouble. Debt-ridden, the company accountants resort to window-dressing the financial statements in order to hide the truth from the public. Three months after the loan, Nishi Osaka Steel goes bankrupt and the ambitious and power-hungry Asano makes Hanzawa the scapegoat for the 500 million loss. Hanzawa is called to Tokyo to answer to the internal investigations team, where he vehemently denies responsibility for the loss, and swears to recover the 500 million yen. That is the only course of action for Hanzawa, if he wants to survive in the banking industry.

It is April at Kokubunkan Public High School which is known for being good at both studies and sports. Aoyagi Haruka, the rookie form teacher of Class 3D, swells with hope. However, the assistant form teacher is Takakura Yuko, the biology teacher with a poor reputation in school. Furthermore, the transfer student Toda Toshio suddenly accuses the class prefect Mochizuki Ryohei and others of bad deeds. There is a lot to sort out for the new school term. One day, Class 3D’s Yamagishi Rio is instructed by her boyfriend, Tatsuya, to collect the email addresses of her friends. Tatsuya attends a first rate university and has also passed the bar exam. He belongs to the “winners”, but is in truth a peddler who sells unregulated herbs. In order to keep her relationship with Tatsuya going, Rio caters to his demands even though she knows is it wrong. Before long, there is a spam email that starts the rumour of Rio offering email addresses and encouraging unregulated herbs. An inspection of Rio’s bag is carried out without warning. Rio seeks Haruka’s help and Haruka promises to keep it a secret from the school. However, Yuko points out that Rio is a mere tool of the peddler. In addition, there is a call about the collapse of the students of Class 3D after smoking the unregulated herbs. In an attempt to save an embattled Rio, Haruka asks Yuko for help. But Yuko coldly says that she will save Rio in exchange for Haruka’s first paycheck. Yuko, the classics teacher Uchida Sumire and art teacher Fujii Aya wear different faces from daytime. They are “black teachers” who solve problems in return for large sums of money.
