Le Bon Vivre is an intriguing restaurant. The owner and waitress, Ikeyama Juri, accepts only one group of customers a day. The food that Bon Vivre serves is very special. It is “lost food” that no longer exists in this world. The talented chef, Terayashiki Renichi, is Le Bon Vivre’s pride. He will fully reproduce “lost food” such as the food of a shop that is no longer around or the food of a person who is now deceased in response to all sorts of customer requests. It is the role of second chef, Oze Kiyoi, to support Terayashiki and do research on the “lost food”. He will gather information which covers a wide variety of such food. Many people who have heard the rumours about this restaurant try to make a reservation one way or another. However, very few people are able to get a table. They have one thing in common. The customers that get invited to Le Bon Vivre all have struggles, worries or stand at the crossroads in life. Many of them will look ahead and start a brand new life again after eating the reproduced food here. This is the origin of “Shimeshi”, the name of the cuisine served at this restaurant. People who have eaten this food will be given an indication of the path to take.

These days, the term “homeless” has taken on new meaning. There are youths referred to as “net cafe refugees,” who have neither a job nor a place to live, but who find themselves hopping around internet cafes. One such refugee is a 20-year-old girl named Chisato, who lost her mother at a young age due to sickness. She spent her youth trying to escape from the huge debt her father left her, and her battle with the repossessors unfolded every night. Forced out of his research group after conflicts with his colleagues, Ogawa Takanobu takes up an offer to teach at a girls' high school in Nara. When taking roll call on the first day one of his students, Hotta Ito, sneaks into class late, claiming a bogus excuse - that she got a ticket after trying to park her deer in front of the train station. Kamimori Mikijiro is a junior samurai and is absconded by two people. After escaping his pursuers he wanders around the northern provinces for three years. He ends up in Edo's red-light district Yoshiwara. There are a variety of incidents in Yoshiwara which Shiro is trying to solve. Kamimori is hired as a bouncer at an establishment where NVL women teach reading, writing, and prostitute themselves. The two people from Kamimori's past re-emerge in Yoshiwara.

She now has a strong desire to marry, but her fiancé, who works in the same department, suddenly breaks off their engagement.

On the first day of class a young teacher enters an unruly room and begins his first lecture. To gain the students' attention he relates the story of what probably led him into a life of mathematics. Told via flashbacks, the young teacher goes back to a time, probably 20 years earlier, when his mother was hired to look after a professor who suffered brain damage in an auto accident. The brain damage didn't harm the personality of the man but limited his short- term memory to 80 minutes. The accident occurred 10 years earlier, in about 1975, up to that point the professor has a clear memory of events.

A man with leather gloves asks a girl to place a can of cookies in the police substation. Because of this, a police officer dies. Tetsuji Watanabe and Daijiro Kenmotsu, detectives from the #1 investigation team, finds out the identity of the man in leather gloves. They believe the culprit is famous attorney Fujishiro who only takes on miscarriage of justice cases. Fujishiro vehemently denies his involvement in the cookie incident during his interrogation by the Kintori team. Around this time, a man turns himself in and takes responsibility for an explosion at a police substation.
