In the early days of the Republic, legendary martial artist Ye Ruzhou suffers a severe injury, losing her memory and winding up in the impoverished alley of Minfu Lane. A daughter films her nonagenarian father supporting her mother with dementia. The result is a heart-warming and moving documentary depicting a family amidst an extremely aging society.

Hitsujido Honpo, an established Japanese-style sweets company known for its traditional flavours and reliability, has maintained a modest popularity. To win a new segment of customers, it has embarked on new business development. The leader of this team of five young employees is 28-year old Kudo Mayuko (Takahata Mitsuki). Mayuko was headhunted by the current CEO Okazaki Kengo (Maruyama Tomomi), for her achievements in her previous job. However, she struggles with the difficulty of new business development and pressures within the company. One day, a “new” 68-year-old employee Niimoto Kazuo (Kusakari Masao) is assigned to be Mayuko’s subordinate all of a sudden. She is dumbfounded to learn that he is 40 years her senior and even feels anger. Mayuko is confronted with the question of whether he should do the old job he was proud of? Or a new job as a brand new employee, and assumes the role of mentor.

Like all the people in this village, in the mountains, information is not available, transportation is not easy, even if they die, not many people know their names, they are collectively called "villagers". When Wu Yingxia, the only teacher in the village, died, her adopted daughter, Hao Huilan, took over her mother's legacy and supported the school. The young and beautiful Hui Lan of course wanted to go out and see the outside world, no one wanted to be a "mountain flower" in the village for the rest of her life, and the meagre salary of a teacher did not help to fulfil her wish.

But when her shopping spree starts to get tangled, the men show their true side when they discover that they have been manipulated.

"Although somewhat inferior to Nobuo Nakagawa's black and white version of a similar story, Borei Kaibyo Yashiki, this movie makes extensive use of its color footage, especially when showing the apparitions in a ghostly green light or the pond from the title tinted red. The furry cat-ghost-woman DOES look a bit ridiculous, as do some rather cheapish superimposed images, but the marvelous cinematography and the effective score still work pretty well to create a very creepy atmosphere. All in all, another example to make you wish more of these classic Japanese ghost chillers will be released for today's western audiences."
