In the early days of the Republic, legendary martial artist Ye Ruzhou suffers a severe injury, losing her memory and winding up in the impoverished alley of Minfu Lane. The story follows a young man who has been single for a year after his boyfriend suddenly disappeared without a formal breakup. Ten years have passed since Eriko moved to Tokyo to become an actress. She works mostly as a waitress there. Eriko then learns that her estranged older sister has passed away. Eriko goes back to her hometown to attend to her sister's funeral. Without giving much thought, Eriko declares that she will take care of her older sister's 10-year-old son. She also learns that her older sister worked as a "nakiya" - a hired person who attends funerals and mourns for the deceased.

A sacred girl of Hell enjoys some time on Earth when she fiddles with some sacred Buddhist artifacts and unleashes some evil stuff. The girl has some muppet friend who falls down a pit into Hell and she and her guardians go in to save it. She upsets the gods and is sentenced to live a life in a sacred statue with no chance of sunlight. She refuses to go and instead opts to die but is granted seven last days on Earth. The queen of Hell plots to steal her life force to destroy all humanity.

Everything changes for the Ing family when the husband and father is diagnosed with terminal cancer. The mother, who is the main supporter has become more isolated, while the son is no longer certain about his future plans although he has been accepted to study abroad. The conflicted family returns to the father’s hometown for the tomb-sweeping ritual, but his original mountain tomb has been replaced by a newly built hotel.

Set in freezing Japanese winter, Koroshi (=killing/film noir in Japanese) is a quite typically Japanese movie, first and foremost inspired by Melville and to a lesser extent by fellow countryman Takeshi Kitano. The main character is a normal Japanese worker who is now unemployed - a fact he hides from his wife by spending his day at a gambling hall and making "salary payments" to himself. One day he is contacted by a mystery man who offers him a job as a contract killer. The job is easy, just shoot at the neck, never look in the eyes. And then: run. The man accepts this and soon finds new meaning and joy in life... The movie is absurd, and a thoroughly original take on the morale in Japanese society. The images are beautiful, and the people are as cold as the snow that surrounds them. The take on Melville's "Samoraï" from -67 is obvious, but Kobayashi turns the image around and portrays the killer as the weakest person in the movie - haunted by his demanding wife and the moaning contractor, who is one of the most mysterious characters ever portrayed in a movie. Perhaps the sound is the most masterful feature of this film. The humming of the wind power stations and the creaking sound of snow under boots leaves you chilled and muted. I left 'Koroshi' freezing, but I can't wait to get back in. 

University student Izumi is contacted by her drama club advisor in high school, Hayama, who wants her to participate in the graduation performance for a younger club member. Izumi received the support of Hayama when she had felt out of place at school and so has treasured memories with Hayama in her heart. However, when they reunite, her feelings begin to intensify.
