Kang In-Ho (Gong Yoo) is a newly appointed teacher at a school for the hearing-impaired in Mujin city. On the way to his new job he becomes involved in a minor car accident and takes his car to a local car repair shop. There his already wrecked car is bumped by a woman named Yoo-Jin (Jung Yu-Mi). Yoo-Jin is an employee at the Mujin Human Rights Center. On the first day at his new school, In-Ho meets the school's principal and director of administration. They are an identical twins. The director of administration asks for a bribe of 50 million WON ($50,000 USD) to work at their school. In-Ho's financial situation is already in dire circumstances. His daughter who is staying with his mother suffers from asthma. In-Ho's wife has passed away. In-Ho makes a phone call to his mother asking for the money. She delivers the 50 million WON by taking out the deposit money for their home. While teaching the hearing-impaired students, In-Ho feels something strange about the kid's distant appearances. On his way home, In-Ho notices one of his students Yoo-Ri sitting on the ledge of her dorm room window, which is several stories above ground. He rushes into the dorm building and makes it into Yoo-Ri's room to pull her away from the window. Yoo-Ri then leads In-Ho to a door down the hall and stops. In-Ho goes into the room and sees the superintendent of the dormitory beating a male student named Yeon-Doo. In-Ho is shocked by the brutality and eventually takes Yeon-Doo to the hospital. In-Ho also makes a phone call to Yoo-Jin, the lady from the huma rights center who bumped into him earlier, and asks her to come to the hospital. Soon, In-Ho and Yoo-Jin uncover unfathomable actions committed by the school's faculty against the students. Their work to break the children's silence is only beginning. Meanwhile, In-Ho feels his own pressures to stay silent as his new job already cost his family their home's deposit money and medical bills are piling up for his daughter.

At the height of the 16th-century Chosun Dynasty, a pair of rural male actors - boisterous, macho Jang Seng and quiet, feminine Gong Gil - travels to Seoul and team up with a struggling acting troupe. When their irreverent show, complete with enough bawdy humor and gender-bending to make a contemporary audience blush, mocks the famously hedonistic king, they get more than they bargained for. After being promptly arrested, they're given a chance to spare themselves if they can make the king laugh. To everyone's surprise, the ecstatic monarch loves the show and names the actors official court jesters, giving them more extravagant food and shelter than they'd ever imagined. But the king's attentiveness to Gong Gil makes it quickly apparent that humour isn't the only thing motivating his generosity. The king's mistress, the country's ministers and Jang Seng soon grow suspicious, and jealousy and anger spring from all sides.

She lives alone with her conservative mother, who is still grieving over the recent death of her husband in a car accident; she opposes her daughter having any kind of fun and urges her to study hard for the forthcoming college entrance exam. At school Jiujiu's best friend is the outgoing Han Xia, who is always pushing her to be more daring. Han Xia herself also has a secret admirer in the geeky Zhou Yunkai. The two girls hang out with a group of four boys at the same school: Xia Jinghan, who comes from a broken family and lives with his grandmother; his childhood friend Luo Fan, whose parents are also divorced but whose background is wealthier; tubby, apparently cowardly Zuoqiang, nicknamed "Wet Crotch"; and tall, athletic Li Wei, a straightforward guy. One evening, while the group is celebrating at a karaoke club after a street brawl, a fire breaks out in Jiujiu's flat due to a pot left on the stove, and her mother becomes distraught. Following a mass fight with the students of another school, Jinghan is expelled and the other three boys get an official warning. Jiujiu, who developed a liking for Jinghan, is upset. When a singing competition is announced, Luo Fan presses Jinghan, who's now working in a restaurant to support himself and his grandmother, to take part. As the college entrance exam approaches, Luo Fan also urges Jiujiu to take part, to encourage Jinghan. Jiujiu keeps her decision secret from her mother, but private jealousies are already threatening to split up the group

Satoshi Kubo has been dubbed the "God of Death" since he was a child.
