In the early days of the Republic, legendary martial artist Ye Ruzhou suffers a severe injury, losing her memory and winding up in the impoverished alley of Minfu Lane. Spring 1941. Toshihiko shows up at the home of his aunt in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture. He entertains a crush on his tubercular cousin Mina while reveling in "depraved" adolescence with the girls and indulging in bravery-testing escapades with his school buddies. Meanwhile, the Pacific War erupts.

As a young child, 13-year-old Junichi Miyata was bullied at school and cried easily. He made a promise to himself that he would grow up into a "cool guy" - not so easily displaying his emotions. Now as a middle-aged man, Junichi Miyata (Ken Mitsuishi) works as a driver for a parcel delivery company. He lives with his two kids, unemployed 19-year-old Toshiya (Ryu Morioka) & 18-year-old Momoko (Jun Yoshinaga). Junichi's wife passed away from stomach cancer several years earlier. Junichi now finds it difficult to communicate with his kids and he's worried that he has cancer like his late wife. Junichi then visits old friend Sanada (Tomorowo Taguchi) to talk about his problems. Miyata hopes to graduate from college and build fond memories with his children before it's too late.

Master Chu, a retired Chinese Tai-Chi master, moves to Westchester, New York to live with his son Alex, his American daughter-in-law Martha, and their son Jeremy. However, Martha's second novel is suffering from severe writers' block brought on by Chu's presence in the house. Alex must struggle to keep his family together as he battles an inner conflict between cultural tradition and his modern American lifestlye.
