Chiaki Shinichi wins he prestigious Platini International Music Competition and becomes the new orchestra conductor for the Le Marlet Orchestra. Chiaki then goes with Frank to observe the orchestra and is astonished by their poor performance. It seems due to lack of funding the orchestra lost many of its members & the interest of its audience. Meanwhile, Nodame prepares for a graduation exam at her music school. She is happy that Chiaki has finally become a conductor and becomes even more enthusiastic when Chiaki asks her to play Ravel's "Bolero" with the orchestra. But, her excitement soon turns to disappointment when Son Rui takes her part in the "Bolero" performance. Nodame tries to hide her disappointment from Chiaki. The performance itself turns out to be a bomb. The audience laughs while Chiaki tries to do his best. Chiaki thinks back to his first practice with the S Orchestra and his teacher Franz Strezemann. Nodame attempts to comfort Chiaki after the performance, with Nodame and Chiaki eventually deciding that they will make the next one a success. Chiaki holds an audition for new members in his orchestra, while Nodame takes care of the promotional activities. Finally, the performance is set to begin. The film starts dazzlingly enough. It's 2AM, and the city of Hong Kong is positively bursting with energy. Neon lights flash, cars whizz by and huge masses of people crowd the downtown. It is Saturday night, and it seems all of Hong Kong has come out to play. Chan captures that barely controlled chaos of big city life remarkably well. His camera roves back and forth like a rubbernecking tourist and his edits are sharp, fast and frequent as we are introduced to seventeen different characters. All of them are getting on to the same late night bus from the Hong Kong core to the district of Tai Po.

Though its multitude of characters and warring factions might make Gojoe somewhat confusing to Western eyes, the basic storyline is simple: warriors of the Heike clan get their heads chopped off by an invisible force at Gojoe bridge. Benkei, a former Buddhist monk plagued by the demons of his own past, sets out to destroy the evil force that lurks at Gojoe, aided by his graverobbing sidekick Tetsukichi. They soon discover that the perpetrator is in fact a young warrior, a former lord named Shanao, out for revenge against the clan that ordered the death of his family. The fact that Sogo Ishii, the creator of such contemporary punk masterpieces as Burst City (Bakuretsu Toshi, 1982) and Crazy Thunder Road (Kuruizaki Sandaa Rodo, 1980) is at the helm should be an indication that this is not your average swords-and-kimonos adventure. Gojoe plays less like a jidai geki than a true Ishii film in period garb. Elements and themes from his films from the 1990s - spiritualism, the metaphysical, man being a small but essential part of the greater cosmic scheme - are combined with a resurgence of the boundless energy of his work from the 80s.
