The film is about Nagata, a clumsy unsellable theater director and his brave lover Saki who purely loves him. Their romance began when Nagata spoke to Saki and noticed that he wore the same sneakers as her. Saki dreams of being an actress, makes her move to Tokyo and pursues a fashion degree. Nagata, has no money and decides to live with Saki. An ageing fishing boat, Dai-go Fukuryu Maru "Lucky Dragon No. 5" sets out from the port of Yaizu in Shizuoka Prefecture. It travels around the Pacific line fishing. While the ship is near Bikini Atoll, the ship's navigator sees a flash. All the crew come up to watch. They realize it is an atomic explosion, but take time to clear their fishing gear. A short time later, grey ash starts to fall on the ship. When the ship returns to port the sailors have been burned brown. They unload the fish, which are then transported away. They visit the local doctor and then go to Tokyo for an examination. It turns out they are all highly radioactive. Their symptoms become worse, and the contaminated fish causes a panic. The men are taken to hospitals in Tokyo, leaving their families behind. The radio operator, Kuboyama (Jukichi Uno), dies from the radiation.

Hyeong-man is in his fifties and has regrettably never dated. After having lost all his money to a close friend, Hyeong-man spends his monotonous and frustrating life in his photo studio. One day, Hyeong-man decides to pay his fraudulent friend, Ki-hyuk, a visit, after having heard that he is dying of cancer. Ki-hyuk requests that Hyeong-man look after his daughter, Nam-eun, once in a while after he dies. After Ki-yuk passes away, Hyeong-man decides to visit his friend's daughter, who is surprisingly a full-grown woman. Noticing that Nam-eun is more distressed over the death of her pet cat than that of her father, Hyeong-man decides to look after her once in a while. Nam-eun finds her father's silly and unmarried friend quite interesting. Using Hyeong-man's dirty laundry as an excuse, Nam-eun frequently visits Hyeong-man, gradually expressing her feelings for him. Although awkward and surprised at first, Hyeong-man is curious about his feelings for his friend's daughter and soon Hyeong-man and Nam-eun begin to go on a series of unusual dates.
