The film is set in the early 20th century, during the Japanese colonial rule of Korea. Jeong Taek is a master of Pyongyang Nalpharam, a form of the ancient Taekkyeon martial art perfected on Mount Taeseong near Pyongyang. A transcendentally weird sex comedy that hits the ground running, Zero Man zeroes in on its protagonist, goofball Sakuragi (Chihiro Itakura), who emerges from the blur of a power nap of an undetermined duration in an unknown location. Without a clue as to who he is, what he’s doing there in full police uniform, and what he’s up to in life in general, he finds himself inexplicably endowed with quite possibly the wackiest superpower ever: he has the bizarre ability, whenever he gets erect, to see numbers on the foreheads of everyone around him, including his own, which registers a rather dismal zero. This soon raises three crucial questions: who on earth is he? What should he do with this power that requires crotch friction to actually function? And what should he make of said numbers?

Encounters of the Spooky Kind is Hung's first stab at the martial arts/horror/comedy hybrid that became very popular in the 80s, and sees the talented actor/director starring as Bold Cheung, a fearless pedicab driver who is unaware that his wife has been having an affair with Mr. Tam, one of his clients. After narrowly avoiding being caught in the act, Mr. Tam decides that life would be easier with Cheung permanently out of the way, and so hires a warlock to try and dispose of the poor guy.

Radically rethinking the tired talking-heads template, Tsai Ming-liang's latest digital experiment turns the human face into a subject of dramatic intrigue. Comprised of a series of portrait shots of mostly anonymous individuals (Tsai devotees will no doubt recognize his long-time muse, Lee Kang-sheng), the film shrewdly deemphasizes language while reducing context to a bare minimum. In their place, the beauty and imperfections of each face take center stage. Accompanied by Ryuichi Sakamoto's soundtrack of dynamically modulating drone frequencies, Tsai's subjects variously speak, stare, and, at one point, sleep as the camera quietly registers the weight of personal history and accumulated experience writ beautifully across every last pore and crevasse.
