Lee Dong-ho, a game show producer, and Choi Miran, a freelance illustrator meet by chance and spend a short but passionate night together. But just when they are about to go back to their ordinary lives, they witness a shocking murder. This is followed by mysterious happenings that destroy everything that they cherish in their lives. A police officer turns out to be a kidnapper and hired killers break into their homes. In front of their eyes, they lose their loved ones. Nobody is of much help to them. Rara Suzuki lives in a small town in Gunma Prefecture with her patient mom and reclusive younger brother Ruruo. With zero recreational options beyond playing pachinko and shopping at department stores, she has become a YouTuber to keep from going crazy, though from the online evidence, including her plastic-flower eyepatch and air of perpetual boredom, Rara is decidedly odd. Nonetheless, she attracts the attention of a reality TV show director who descends on the town with a script already in her head.

It tells the rise of Ito Jakuchu, a rich merchant turned talented artist in mid-Edo era Kyoto. He receives the support and admiration of his friend and mentor, Zen monk and poet, Daiten Kenjo. An apprentice from a toy shop in town, Iwajiro, who longs to become a famous artist himself, envies Jakuchu's connections and position. Iwajiro, who does not have the same privileged background as that of Jakuchu's, vows to beat him someday. Other notable artists that they cross paths with are Ikeno Taiga and his wife, Gyokuran, who both specialize in Chinese ink wash paintings. They are all guided by words of wisdom by the calligrapher, poet, and founder of the sencha tea ceremony Baisao. They are but a few of the personalities that make the historical and artistic atmosphere of Edo-era Kyoto, beautiful, rich and alive.
