In the Great East Japan Earthquake, a young girl named Luca loses her family and is left with a disability that prevents her from speaking properly. International Security Affairs agent Jon is on a dangerous mission to escort a criminal scientist to another country. En route, a member of his team turns out to be a traitor and shoots Jon in the head while kidnapping the scientist. When Jon wakes up in the hospital, a doctor tells him that within weeks, the bullet in his brain will cause complete paralysis. Jon returns to Beijing to see his mother, who confesses that Jon has a brother in Malaysia who was raised by his father, a gambler. Jon takes a flight to Malaysia to find his brother, Yeung. On the plane he forms a bond with Dr. Kan, who promises to look into possible treatments for his condition. However, when they arrive, Yeung tries to kidnap the doctor and when Jon intervenes, he's also taken hostage. The two soon realize they're brothers, and decide to work together in order to keep the criminals behind the kidnappings from reinfecting the world of a disease long thought cured.

30-year-old Jo In-yeong (Kim), a teacher at a private Seoul school, is shown besotted with 17-year-old pupil Lee Seok (Lee Tae-seong) during one of her night classes. (Their respective ages become an important plot point later on.) After giving him a lift home, she blurts out her feelings, and the two talk in her car. Back home, her live-in b.f., Jeong-woo (Kim Yeong-jae), seems strangely untroubled by her fascination for the youth. Cut to a pigtailed teenage girl, also called Jo In-yeong (Jeong Yu-mi), whose b.f., Lee Su (also Lee), dies in a traffic accident. At the funeral, she meets his twin brother, Lee Seok (Lee again), and a romance develops, with the youngsters eventually making love. This strand is crosscut with the developing story of the teacher and the pupil that eventually brings out the hidden rebel in In-yeong's nature.

Based on a novella by famed post-war writer Sakaguchi Ango, the film follows the lives of three characters caught up in the turmoil of Tokyo near the end of the war. A soldier returning home after having lost an arm in battle, a former prostitute who uses her body as a tool for survival but can no longer feel pleasure, and a jaded writer, certain of Japan's imminent demise and resigned to death. While the novelist and prostitute take to living together in order to find some comfort amidst the chaos, the soldier becomes a serial rapist, unable to stop the cycle of violence started whilst in China.
