Naruse Uta is a "unique" 13-year-old child. She possessed the talent to read sheet music even before she could speak but has now come to the point where she hates playing the piano. Her father was also a piano virtuoso but mysteriously disappeared from her life at a young age. Because of her father's disappearance, Uta's mother had to move out of their posh home and into a far modest working-class neighbourhood. In this working-class neighbourhood, there is a local grocer. The grocer's son, Kikuna Oto, happens to be a budding musician but lacks the drive to truly succeed. That is until Uta Naruse comes into his life.

After Jae-Hyun is discharged from the military, he begins to sell roasted sweet potatoes to pay for his university tuition fees. Hye-Ri works at a room salon. She often buys roasted sweet potatoes from Jae-Hyun. One day, drunken Hye-Ri goes to Jae-Hyun and asks him to be her friend. Jae-Hyun says yes. Later, at the corner of an alley, Hye-Ri is bitten by an employee at the room salon. Jae-Hyun helps her and they become closer. Through chance, they spend a night together. The next morning, Hye-Ri finds money apparently left behind on purpose by Jae-Hyun. She is hurt by his actions and never sees Jae-Hyun again. Jae-Hyun now works at an insurance company. Hye-Ri then reappears in Jae-Hyun's life and they fall in love. They even begin to live together. Suddenly, Hye-Ri tells Jae-Hyun that she wants to become an actress. Jae-Hyun supports her, but he eventually tires of supporting her. Around this time, Jae-Hyun begins a relationship with a beautiful client. The relationship between Jae-Hyun and Hye-Ri is now shattered. To make matters worse, goons from the room salon where Hye-Ri formerly worked, begin to look for her and pressures Jae-Hyun.

A town with no future and no hope.

Seventeen-year-old Yeon Gyu was born in this place and has never been anywhere else. While enduring the repeated violence inflicted by his stepfather, he saves up money in the lone hope of moving to the Netherlands with his mother. Chi Geon, born and raised in this town, is now a mid-level boss in a criminal organization. Having learned early in life that this world is hell, he gets by in his own way.

One day Yeon Gyu gets into a fight to protect his stepsister Ha Yan. Unable to raise the settlement money, Yeon Gyu is helped by Chi Geon, and in that way Yeon Gyu comes to start a new life as a member of Chi Geon’s gang. Although scared and awkward, Yeon Gyu gradually adjusts with the help of Chi Ggeon who is like an older brother to him. Having earned Chi Geon’s trust while fighting to survive in the gang, Yeon Gyu begins to fall into more and more dangerous circumstances.

In order to escape from hell, they become a part of it.

After spending 17 years behind bars, Hyun-Woo (Ji Jin-Hee) is released from prison. During his college days, Hyun-Woo was involved in the student led anti-government protests that swept across Korea in the early 1980’s. Now that he is finally free, Hyun-Woo travels back to the town where he spent a few precious months immediately prior to his arrest. 17 years ago, Hyun-Woo fled into the rural areas of Korea, hiding from the government that was trying to quash his anti-government group. He found sanctuary in the home of Han Yoon-Hee (Yum Jung-Ah). She was a former sympathizer to the anti-government cause, but now living a modest life as a teacher in a small rural community. The couple quickly became intimate, Hyun-Woo able to provide the spark that was missing from Han Yoon-Hee’s simple life.

Unfortunately, while Hyun-Woo was still hiding in Han Yoon-Hee’s home, he learned that most of his fellow anti-government protesters were captured & imprisoned. Even though the government now has Hyun-Woo high on their most wanted list, he feels ashamed that he is living peacefully while his friends are imprisoned. Thus, he makes the difficult decision to leave Han Yoon-Hee and go back to the movement centered in Seoul. What he would later learn is that he left behind the sole person that would stay faithful to him throughout his 17 year imprisonment and also the woman that is carrying his baby.

The bedding shop that Terashima Yoshitaro (Emoto Akira) runs counters the flashy bargain sale of a large store with quality service. It steadily boosts sales. This is all thanks to Terashima whose only purpose in life is stashing money away. Even his wife, Mitsu (Watanabe Eri), is disgrunted with his stinginess, but carries out her duties as an obedient wife. One day, an attractive young female customer called Sugita Rieko (Ono Machiko) comes to Terashima’s shop. It is love at first sight for him. Although the young Rieko loathed her mother for being that way, she has been involved with men like her mother and obtained money after coming to Tokyo. He neglected his business while the money he had saved has vanished in support of Rieko. It is about her first love, Kawazoe Naoki (Ozawa Yukiyoshi), who has become a university’s associate professor. Her love with Naoki had vanished like a bubble due to her mother. However, the sight of his face brings an unusual peace of mind to Rieko who has lived alone ever since she came to Tokyo. Despite the “dark past” between Rieko and Naoki that cannot be erased, Rieko has deliberately disassociated. Wanting to see Naoki, she shows up in front of him. This sudden reunion renders him momentarily speechless. Rieko regains her love for Naoki. However, Terashima is sensitive to the subtle emotional change.
