In the early days of the Republic, legendary martial artist Ye Ruzhou suffers a severe injury, losing her memory and winding up in the impoverished alley of Minfu Lane. Rai keeps failing to find a regular job. He works on setting up an exhibition for classic novel "The Tale of Genji" as a part-time laborer. At the exhibition, he listens to the narration about younger brother Ninomiya and older brother Ichinomiya from "The Tale of Genji." Rai can relate to the story. His younger brother is smart and handsome, but Rai is unable to find a regular job. His inferiority complex about his younger brother gets worse.

On the way back home, he hears that his younger brother has passed his medical school entrance exams. Rai decides to wander around his neighborhood, without going home. At that time, he sees a strange light and is sucked into the light. When he wakes up, Rai finds himself in the Heian period, which is the setting for the novel "The Tale of Genji." He learns about the Heian period from a pamphlet he picked up at the exhibition. He introduces himself as Onmyoji Raimei Ito. Thanks to a headache pill he has on him, he is hired as an onmyoji by the emperor’s wife Nyogo Kokiden. She is a fearless woman and coldly analytical in her actions. She desires to have her son take the emperor's position.

One day, Ji-Hwan (Cha Tae-Hyun) begins to receive letters from an unidentified person. The letters, containing black-and-white photos of happy children playing, remind Ji-Hwan of his old two friends. The random letters inspire Ji-Hwan to depart anxiously on a long journey to find his old friends, but while looking for Soo-in and Gyung-hee, he confronts a beautiful yet sad secret.

Set in the fictional Unasaka domain, the story involves a samurai who's obligated to follow an order that could destroy his relationship with his own younger sister.

Min Ho works as a counselor at a psychology counseling center, which is run by the government. He gets tired of his daily life and listening to the complaint of his clients. The stress that he feels affects his relationship with other people including his family. At his apartment, which he just moved into, he finds post-it notes written by the former occupant of the apartment. The notes are written explanations about the apartment. He learns that the former owner is a woman. Min Ho wants to meet her.
