In the early days of the Republic, legendary martial artist Ye Ruzhou suffers a severe injury, losing her memory and winding up in the impoverished alley of Minfu Lane. Ppong-Ddol offers to Chul-Wook the job of becoming the band's manager if he can provide funding for the band. Chul-Wook goes asks his mom for money. Ppong-Ddol’s older brother Dong-Ho visits him for the first time in a lengthy while. They recall the past, including getting kicked out of their family. They blame each other. Both of them are also in need of money. They decide to go see their oldest brother and ask for forgiveness and some money, but their afraid of his fist.

The film is set in the early 1980s and follows a Shanghai family who had gone to work in a factory in Guizhou as part of the 'Third Front', intended as an industrial base if China were invaded. The father, obsessed with returning to Shanghai for a better life for his family, attempts to prevent a romance between his daughter and a local worker. The film is partly autobiographical in nature, as Wang's family was also sent to Guizhou as a child.

Hearing-impaired teenager Chang Cheng transfers to a school for children with special needs. However, the world of the hearing-impaired doesn’t seem quiet at all. Hero Wu (吳英雄) is a righteous but reckless police officer newly assigned to the South District Crime Unit (南區重案組). After wrecking undue havoc during a mission — such as setting a truckload of U.S. cash ablaze — Hero is restrained from further missions. He nevertheless goes after a mysterious transaction involving a suitcase that ostensibly holds diamonds. Gangster Xu Da-fu (徐達夫) sets out to broker the diamonds but was attacked by a heavily armed squad. Before long, SIS Captain Vince Au (歐文斯) starts hunting for the suitcase, revealing involvement by officials higher up as well as a shady international organization called Pandawa.
