The story follows a young man who has been single for a year after his boyfriend suddenly disappeared without a formal breakup. Based on a novella by famed post-war writer Sakaguchi Ango, the film follows the lives of three characters caught up in the turmoil of Tokyo near the end of the war. A soldier returning home after having lost an arm in battle, a former prostitute who uses her body as a tool for survival but can no longer feel pleasure, and a jaded writer, certain of Japan's imminent demise and resigned to death. While the novelist and prostitute take to living together in order to find some comfort amidst the chaos, the soldier becomes a serial rapist, unable to stop the cycle of violence started whilst in China.

Shin Ha Kyun will star as Se Ha, a man who has a brilliant mind and an impressive way with words, which he uses to fight back against the prejudices of society. Lee Kwang Soo will star as Dong Goo, a man with outstanding athletic abilities and excellent physical health.

The two protagonists each have a different tragic flaw: Se Ha’s weakness is his body, while Dong Goo’s weakness is his brain. Although the two men are not biologically related, they are an inseparable pair of close friends who have spent over 20 years together living almost as a single entity.

A writer living in Mushashino, Sugimoto Ryuji's novels "Yatou Denki" and "1" were featured in the local newspaper, Koushin Newspaper. One day, an application from Shiota Yoshiko was delivered to Koushin Newspaper with the gist of its contents saying "Yatou Denki seems interesting, so I'd like to read your publication". Sugimoto Ryuji then sent a letter of acknowledgement to Yoshiko. However, in less than one month's time since the application was made, these words were delievered "Your novel is too boring so I will not purchase it anymore"

Family members learn the whereabouts of the father who vanished without a trace 13 years ago. However, he dies of cancer three months later, leaving Koji and his family members without closure. Koji and his family think they can't reclaim the lost 13 years, but the stories told about their father by mourners at the funeral reveal the truth that was unknown to the family.
