    The Seaside Motel (2010)

    The Seaside Motel
    Genre:
    Drama
    Country:
    Japanese
Director Moriya Kentaro (School Daze) goes for a Japanese take on Four Rooms with Seaside Motel, an ensemble comedy based on the comic book Motel by Okada Yukio. The surreal comedy first hilariously sets up its premise by bringing groups of strangers that include gangsters, gamblers, and call girls into four separate rooms, only to send them into a chaotic colliding course over one fateful night. To match his eccentric group of characters, Moriya has brought together an equally eccentric cast that includes Ikuta Toma (The Fallen Angel), Aso Kumiko (Instant Swamp), Yamada Takayuki (Crows Zero), Tamayama Tetsuji (Goemon), Narumi Riko (Bushido Sixteen), and Furuda Arata (20th Century Boys). The first thing that's wrong with the Seaside Motel is that it's surrounded by mountains with no sea by its side. The second thing wrong is its weird group of guests tonight: A traveling salesman of bogus cosmetics (Ikuta Toma) and a call girl (Kumiko Aso); a businessman with erectile dysfunction (Furuta Arata) and his bored wife; a indebted gambler (Yamada Takayuki), his girlfriend (Narumi Riko), and his debt collector (Tamayama Tetsuji); and don't forget the cabaret girl and her usual customer. They may all be in different rooms with their own problems, but the paths of these strangers will intertwine into an unsolvable knot on this particularly eventful night, and it can only happen at the Seaside Motel.

Chanakya, however, is alive and to their surprise, he names them as the perpetrators. They are taken to the court to be tried. Chitti, a lawyer by profession who has no knowledge on the law, tries to prove their innocence but the judge is unconvinced. He postpones the judgment and sends them to jail. Chanakya bails them out and his men take them to a den. Chanakya asks them the whereabouts of his mobile phone which Ravi used while they were trying to dispose of him. Ravi fails to recollect about the mobile. Srikanth overhears that they are going to be killed as soon as Chanakya gets hold of the mobile. They manage to escape and decide to find the mobile so that they can blackmail Chanakya to withdraw the case. They trace the mobile to their car's boot, only to find that the car is in Chanakya's den. While retrieving the mobile, Ravi gets trapped in the car which Chanakya's fans decide to burn as a mark of protest. The next day, Srikanth and Sekhar rescue Ravi. They challenge Chanakya's brother-in-law but the mobile accidentally falls in a tea kettle. As a last hope, they deliver the mobile to Chanakya's rival Ramachandra. But he double-crosses them and joins hands with Chanakya in exchange for money. They are sent to court again for the trial. In a final attempt to save themselves, Srikanth fabricates a story that Chanakya is involved in a scam with Hong Kong-based businessmen, which everyone believes. The judge orders the police to unravel the conspiracy. In order to escape from the public outrage, the party pressurizes Chanakya to sever all his ties with Hong Kong and withdraw the case, which he obliges. Srikanth and his friends are acquitted of the crime. The Indo-Asian Games contract is given to Swatantra Electronics and Chanakya's political fan is taken into custody. Srikanth goes back to Jogipet to run his own ladies emporium and marries Chitti. In the end, it's revealed that the mobile has a recording where Chanakya claims to be a national champion in cricket, in which he is a goalkeeper.

    A Distant Cry from Spring (1980) (1980)

A Distant Cry from Spring (1980)
    Genre:
    Drama, Family, Friendship, Romance
    Country:
    Japanese

I first saw this film at the Hong Kong International Film Festival in 1981 and have often looked for it since (without any luck). Of the 50 films I saw in those 16 days (including masterpieces by Angelopoulos, and Syberberg's Hitler, A Film From Germany), Yamada's simple story turned out to be my favorite. When it recently turned up in a 5-disk Yoji Yamada box set, I immediately ordered it. Well, the disk is very poor quality, a murky transfer with the widescreen compositions butchered by a truly wretched pan-and-scan job -- and yet the quality of the film still manages to shine through.

On its surface, there's nothing particularly remarkable about A Distant Cry From Spring. A widow struggles to maintain a small farm in a remote area of Hokkaido, fighting the elements and raising her young son. One brutally stormy night, a stranger appears at the door looking for shelter. Though wary, the widow offers him her hospitality. He leaves, but then returns in the spring and asks for work, desiring only room and board in return. What follows is the depiction of a slowly developing emotional bond set against a beautifully observed portrait of daily life on the farm, an endless round of backbreaking chores which constantly threaten to overwhelm the lonely woman.

There is nothing terribly surprising in the revelations which eventually emerge about the characters, but they are so finely drawn and their emotional lives resonate with such authenticity, that only a cold-blooded viewer could fail to be moved by the film's resolution.

Yamada is a master of emotional nuance and a brilliant observer of the small details of ordinary lives, which he obviously holds in some kind of awe, and in which he finds a kind of magic. He makes you feel for the characters without ever stooping to sentimentality or easy manipulation. His work deserves to be more widely known, and he certainly deserves better treatment from DVD distributors.
