The story follows a young man who has been single for a year after his boyfriend suddenly disappeared without a formal breakup. The movie is set in Shanghai in the early Republican era. Cheng Daqi, a young man working at a fruit stall, travels to Shanghai in search of a new life and he meets Hong Shouting, a police chief who is also a triad boss. Hong's wife, Ling Husheng, recognises Cheng's talent and successfully persuades her husband to let Cheng join them. Cheng gradually rises through the ranks in the criminal underworld of Shanghai and becomes an influential triad boss. He meets Bao, who falls in love with him, but Cheng's true love is actually his childhood friend Ye Zhiqiu, who has gone missing.

Many years later, a middle-aged Cheng has become one of the most notorious and powerful triad bosses in Shanghai, even surpassing his old boss Hong Shouting. However, he finds himself caught up in the struggle between the aggressive Empire of Japan, which is planning to invade China, and the local secret service led by the crafty Mao Zai, who saved his life many years ago. He also encounters his old flame Ye Zhiqiu again, but she is now married to another man.

A horrible date rape case shocks the whole country. High school girl Min-ah is raped by a group of boys while her boyfriend is recording the rape scene. The file is spread online being called “Marionette video”, media swarms like bees for this tabloidy topic. Min-ah becomes a victim of not only a sexual crime, but also a violent media pursuit.

Grown-up victim now lives as Seo-rin, a high school teacher after changing her everything. No one knows what she has gone through in the past. She tries to move forward, but the similar case haunts her again. She receives suspicious pictures of her on the phone. The sender claims it is her ‘Master’, and she should obey him otherwise she’ll experience the same nightmare she had before….less.

In the first of a two-part film project, three short stories from acclaimed Hong Kong horror writer Lilian Lee are adapted for the big screen in this star-studded horror anthology. Results vary from the good to the tedious, however, with the various socio-political messages lost in tired genre trappings. Lilian Lee is one of Hong Kong's most successful authors, who has published hundreds of novels, many of which have been adapted for the big screen. Stanley Kwan's Rouge, Chen Kaige's Farewell My Concubine and Tsui Hark's Green Snake were all originally penned by Lee, and so the prospect of six diverse filmmakers adapting half a dozen of her short stories into an ambitious anthology project was understandably an enticing concept. Tales From The Dark 1, released in Hong Kong this weekend, presents the first three of these adaptations (with Part 2 scheduled to arrive early next month), and boasts contributions from Fruit Chan, Lee Chi Ngai and the directorial debut of actor Simon Yam. The seasoned star of more than 150 films also takes the lead in Stolen Goods, which opens the anthology. Yam plays Kwan, a curmudgeonly loner scraping together a meagre living in a "coffin apartment" no bigger than a jail cell. When he loses his job on a construction site, the obstinate Kwan refuses to go on welfare, despite owing back rent and having no relatives to turn to for help. In desperation Kwan heads to a cemetery and steals a selection of urns, intending to blackmail their relatives into paying a ransom for their return. However, Kwan soon discovers that tampering with human remains will wreak repercussions from the spirit world.

Fear soon engulfs the girls.
