The film is concerned with the lives of the Haruno family, who live in rural Tochigi Prefecture, the countryside north of Tokyo. Nobuo is a hypnotherapist. He teaches his son, Hajime, Go. Hajime becomes an excellent Go player, but he has a rough time with girls and puberty. Yoshiko refuses to be an average housewife, and works on animated film projects at home. She uses assistance from Grandfather Akira, an eccentric old man who is a former animator and occasional model. Eight-year-old Sachiko periodically sees a silent, giant-sized double of herself which mimics or benignly watches her. She contemplates ways to rid herself of it. Uncle Ayano is a sound engineer and record producer who comes to stay for a visit. He engages in inward reflection, seeks closure regarding an old relationship, and recounts a childhood experience- a tale which influences Sachiko and ties into later events.

During the late Ming Dynasty, the Chinese imperial court is plagued by corruption as eunuchs usurp state power and the reigning emperor is deemed incompetent. The Jinyi Wei (literally: Brocade-clad Guards) is the government's secret police, trained in clandestine combat since childhood, they are in charge of conducting missions to ensure peace and stability within the empire. They have the authority to prosecute anyone deemed as an enemy of the state and they devote their lives and lethal prowess to serving the emperor only. When the organization was first founded, the Jinyi Wei took orders directly from the emperor, but now they are under the control of the eunuch faction. The chief eunuch Jia Jingzhong is plotting with an exiled noble, Prince Qing, to rebel against the emperor and seize power. Jia orders Qinglong, the Jinyi Wei chief, to kill the Imperial Councilor Zhao Shenyan and take Zhao's safebox, which supposedly contains a list of names of traitors.

Lee Jung-Ha (Uhm Jung-Hwa) learns that her husband Min Jae-In (Hwang Jung-Min) has just died in a car accident while on a road trip. She then discovers that her husband was having an affair with her old high school friend Kang Na-Roo (Kim Hyo-Jin). After the car accident Na-Roo comes to Jung-Ha and asks to live with her under the promise of her unconditional devotion.

Daikichi learns that his recently deceased grandfather has an illegitimate daughter with an unknown mother. The girl's name is Rin and she is just 6 years old. Everybody in Daikichi's family looks at the girl as an embarrassment and wants no part of her. Daikichi, annoyed by his family's attitude, decides to raise Rin by himself. Planning to conquer the nation, Oda Nobunaga built Azuchi Castle which had Japan's first multi-storied central tower. For the next 3 years, he sent his men into various lands to subdue the country. Because one of his vassals, Hashiba Hideyoshi, had difficulty in taking Takamatsu Castle in Bichu-no-kuni, he sent Akechi Mitushide out as reinforcement for Hideyoshi. At the same time Nobunaga decides to enter Kyoto. The day before his going into Kyoto, he calls his loyal vassal Ota Nobusada and tells him a secret. In addition he gives Nobusada five wooden boxes for safekeeping. Nobusada was famous for being loyal to Nobunaga to the point of idiocy and was called "Gyuichi" (the Cow). Nobunaga takes a handful of men and proceeds towards Kyoto. Early in the morning 2 days later, Gyuichi learns of Nobunaga's death at Honnoji Temple due to treachery. It was impossible for Nobunaga's small number of men including Mori Ranmaru to withstand Mitsuhide's forces and they were said to have perished in the temple fire. But the strange thing is, Nobunaga's remains could not be found.
