The story follows a young man who has been single for a year after his boyfriend suddenly disappeared without a formal breakup. Former national swimmer Cheon Soo dreams of traveling to Palau, and to fund his trip he works as a swimming instructor by day while gambling at night. However, after losing a game of poker he finds himself heavily in debt and in trouble with the loan sharks. Kang, the head of a local drug syndicate, offers to pay off Cheon Soo's debts; in return, Cheon Soo must work as a "marine boy", a mule who smuggles drugs across the open waters. Knowing the danger he faces, Cheon Soo tries to make a run for it, but he is arrested at the airport by police detective Kim Gae Ko. Detective Kim is intent on capturing Kang and faced with no other choice, Cheon Soo agrees to work as a spy on his behalf. His situation becomes further complicated when he falls for Yu Ri, a jazz singer under Kang's charge and the daughter of Kang's best friend. But Yu Ri suspects Kang of killing her father, and she and Cheon Soo plot to take the drug money for themselves.

One day, Ga-In, who has been suffering from Ripley syndrome, meets high school friend Eun-Jung after 7 years hiatus. She feels jealous of her friend who seems to have everything she ever wanted in her life: gorgeous house, husband, children and even her job. Ga-In's envy turns into obsession as she begins to think of herself as Eun-Jung, trying to assume her very identity, including seducing her husband and stealing her child.

The plot revolves around four ladies struggle to find happiness in the capital city of Tokyo:

Satoko: Works as a receptionist at an escort service “Heavan’s Gate.” At home, she often prays to God to find a boy that will love her.

Chihiro: Works in a low level office position. When her roommate, Toko, asks if there is a God, she replies “God would be something like a boyfriend. Buys me whatever I want and makes possible all my wishes.” She often involves herself with men who only use her for sex.

Akiyo: Works at an escort service “Heavan’s Gate” as a call girl. She saves her money in order to eventually buy a condo situated on the 5th floor or higher. Once she gets old & senile, she plans to jump out of her apartment to her death. She is infatuated with Kikuchi, an old school friend. Akiyo changes her appearance when around Kikuchi and conceals the fact that she is a call girl.

Toko: Works obsessively as an illustrator. She suffers from bulimia, a fact she conceals from her roommate, Chihiro.

A North Korean fisherman breaks his boat engine by accident and drifts across into South Korean territory, being picked up by border guards as a spy. After enduring brutal investigations in the South, he eventually gets sent back to North Korea. Before leaving South Korea, he notices the dark side of its society contrasting with its “developed“ image. There, he realizes that economic development does not spell happiness for the people. Although he makes it back home, he receives the same investigations as he did in the south. Then a grave sorrow hits him, trapped in the ideology between the two divided countries against his will.

Tsugumi Dozono (Nana Eikura) works at a large electronics company in Tokyo. She likes to spend long vacations at her grandmother’s house in the countryside. One day, her grandmother passes away and Tsugumi Dozono decides to live in her grandmother's house while working from home. She finds a strange middle-aged man in the house. The man's name is Jun Kaieda (Etsushi Toyokawa).

Jun Kaieda tells Tsugumi that he is her grandmother’s ex-student and her grandmother gave him a key to the annex house. Tsugumi, who does not know the exact relationship between her grandmother and Jun, begins to live with him.
