Masaki Mori's Tokaido Yotsuya kaidan (1956) features Tomisaburo Wakayama, best known as Itto Ogami of the Babycart movies. Wakayama stars as the haunted samurai Iyemon, & Chieko Soma is the hideous ghostly wife, against whom Iyeomon's mother conspired, so that her son could marry Ume of a wealthy family. The depth of Iyemon's madness is intensified in this version, as he ends up driven to psychosis & hunted down by village peasants like a rabid animal (or like the Frankenstein monster). Wakayama drew on exaggerated kabuki traditions to make the Ieyomon rather over-the-top by the end.

On the night of December 29th, Detective Kudo Yuji drives his car to see his mother, who is hospitalized with a serious health condition. He receives a phone call from the station police chief asking about his involvement in the creation of a slush fund. He also learns that that his mother has passed away. Yuji then accidentally hits a man with his car and that man dies. At the hospital, Yuji tries to cover up the death of the man he hit with his car by placing his dead body into his mother's casket. At that time, he receives a text message from Police Officer Yazaki. The text message warns "You killed a person. I know that."

Yuki (Tsubasa Honda) is a 2nd year high school student. She volunteers at a paediatrics ward for her summer vacation, because she wants to witness the moment a person dies. She got that thought after feeling envious of a transfer student's story of seeing a friend's dead body. Yuki has friend named Atsuko (Mizuki Yamamoto).
