A story that revolves around a Peking opera performer and a wealthy businessman who are brought together by their love for Peking opera.

Set in the 1930's, it follows Shang Xirui, a Peking opera performer who relies on his exceptional talent to gain fame in Beiping. Being an outsider, he faces opposition from the locals but doesn't relent nor give up in fulfilling his dreams to promote Peking opera. As he pours himself into mastering the art, wealthy businessman Cheng Fengtai becomes deeply captivated after watching a performance for the first time. He makes acquaintance with Shang Xirui and becomes an avid supporter. Through Cheng Fengtai's help, Shang Xirui builds Shui Yun Lou and trains a new troupe. When the Japanese army invade Beiping in 1937 and patriotic men and women take up arms to fight, Shang Xirui and Zhu Fengtai are moved to make sacrifices for their country.

Shen Jun Yi is a top star and the story revolves around the entertainment industry and talks about the beautiful love with his assistant Su Yan.

Ye Xiao Tian is working as a prison guard at the Ministry of Justice of the Ming dynasty. Upon receiving a testament, he leaves the capital and travels to Huguang province. Due to a freak combination of factors, he ends up pretending to be a government official, but takes his “position” seriously and fights for justice, gaining the love of the people.

Ma Liang is a carefree person who does what he wants without worrying about consequences. However, this has exhausted his girlfriend of two years, Xiao Meng, who proposed a breakup. Ye Man Ling is a rich woman who just experienced a failed marriage. She comes back to China to succeed her deceased father's company. On the way to an award ceremony, Ye Man Ling and Ma Liang bump into each other and thus, began an unfortunate relationship.

Journey to the West is a Chinese television series adapted from the novel of the same title. Production for the 66 episodes long series started on 12 September 2009, and it was first broadcast in mainland China on 28 July 2011 on TVS. The series was produced by Zhang Jizhong[1] and was released a year later than another television series of the same title (broadcast on Zhejiang Satellite TV), but with a different cast and crew.
