Based on the hit romance novel, Sound of the Desert traces the fate of Xin Yue (Cecilia Liu), a young orphan who was adopted by the nomadic Xiongnu tribe. When political turmoil forces Xin Yue to flee, she finds herself in the company of two very different, but alluring men: Mo Xun (Hu Ge), a kind soul, and Wei Wu Ji (Eddie Peng), a cold general. As Xin Yue travels throughout a vast desert of possibilities, she must ask herself who she loves most in this delicate dance of love.

Jin Yu was raised with the people of Xiongnu, although her foster father is a Han. Due to political change within the Xiongnu, she was forced to flee to Chang'an, the then capital of the early Han Dynasty, changing her name to Xing Yue along the way. During her journey, she first meets the calm and kind Mo Xun, and later the handsome yet outwardly cold general Wei Wu Ji. Xing Yue falls for one, but was rejected. Will she untangle her love knot? Who will she choose in the end?

Yue Fei rose from lowly ranks to become a famous military commander who led the defense of Southern Song against northern Jin invaders before being wrongfully put to death by his own government. In Chinese culture even to this day, General Yue Fei's name is synonymous with the word "loyalty."

Sui Tang Yanyi begins in the 580s with the conquest of the Chen dynasty (557-589) by the Sui dynasty under Emperor Wen, and concludes with the return of the Tang dynasty's Emperor Xuanzong to the capital Chang'an in 758 near the end of the An Lushan Rebellion (755-763).

The plot is made up of three main story lines.

The first, with Emperor Yang of Sui and his concubine Zhu Gui'er (朱貴兒) as the central characters, covers the events in the political arena and inner palace in the final years of the Sui dynasty.

The second story line narrates a turbulent period known as the transition from Sui to Tang, when heroes such as Qin Shubao,Shan Xiongxin (單雄信), Cheng Yaojin (程咬金) and Xu Maogong rise up to overthrow the Sui dynasty, followed by stories of how Li Shimin (the future Emperor Taizong of Tang) defeated his rivals and eventually solidified the Tang dynasty's sovereignty over China.

The last story line tells of the romance between Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and Consort Yang, and the events of the An Lushan Rebellion.

The story is set in ancient China during the Southern Song Dynasty. Emperor Gaozong is deceived by the treacherous premier Qin Hui and he puts the patriotic general Yue Fei to death. Qin Hui's supporters dominate the imperial court, leading to widespread corruption in the government. Some righteous ministers oppose Qin Hui, but do not dare to challenge him directly, so they form the secret organization Haoxia to undermine his influence. Eight people with special skills and abilities receive invitations to join Haoxia and their heroic quest begins. The plot's development is based on several loosely-connected subplots and short stories, and ends with a grand finale of a showdown between the heroes and Qin Hui's forces.
