It depicts the transformation of state-owned enterprises after China's economic reform. A Huafu subsidiary in Jingzhou faces a crisis due to changes in the market environment and problems within the enterprise.

Founded in the 1930s, Huafu Company was the among the first batch of state-owned enterprises in China. As the company is about to usher in its 80th anniversary, its subsidiary, Jingzhou Huafu, falls into a huge predicament. Huafu Chairman Lin Manjiang sends Qi Ben'an to Jingzhou to resolve the issue. After Qi Ben'an assumes his new role, he realizes that he has many hurdles to overcome.

On one hand, he has to unite the cadres and the masses that include individuals like Shi Hongxing to resolve the long-drawn conflicts between them. On the other hand, he must also win the support of the municipal party committee secretary and carefully maneuver the company's relationship with the local government. Throughout the process, Qi Ben’an never strays from his original intentions as he treads the proper path towards production and development and also accumulates a wealth of experience for the reform of state-owned enterprises.

A career woman over the age of 30 stands up against unfair practices at the workplace. She is caught between two men - her trusted assistant and her boss who is an eligible bachelor. Always one to choose reason over emotion, will Shen Ruo Xin who is considered a 'leftover woman' be brave enough to pursue a romance with a younger man or will she marry the man that society dictates?

As a woman in a large male-dominated firm, Shen Ruo Xin has been having trouble securing a promotion. As it turns out, Shen Ruo Xin's boyfriend is the mastermind behind the ordeal because he wants Shen Ruo Xin to lose her job and marry him. Shen Ruo Xin refuses her boyfriend's wedding proposal and resolutely breaks up with him. However, the photo incident has already affected her career and she is transferred to the administration department. Qi Xiao who is sensitive and loyal to Shen Ruo Xin follows her despite the demotion.

Meanwhile, Xu Ming Jie who suddenly became the company VP starts to pursue Shen Ruo Xin. Qi Xiao gets mad over the fact that Xu Ming Jie's ex has been purposely provoking Shen Ruo Xin. When it comes to money, family and career, Shen Ruo Xin whose heart has opened up to Qi Xiao finally realizes that love is never going to be an equivalent exchange because it's simply about two people with a mutual attraction and understanding.

A modern businessman travels back to ancient times; he lands in the body of a man about to be married as a matrilocal husband into a family of cloth merchants. He then begins incorporating modern methods and ideals to help his friends and battle corrupt local businesses. Ultimately he becomes involved in the affairs of the country.

Set during a time of reform in the 1980s, this is a story about youth and love that revolves around 6 families living on Mayang street in Guangzhou.

Ou Xiao Jian is a bad boy who dates Ma Xiao Xiao, a school girl in the neighborhood. Yi Dong Dong has had a crush on Ma Xiao Xiao from the moment they met.

The 18-year-old Yi Dong Dong moves with his family back to their hometown and falls in love at first sight for his neighbor Ma Xiao Xiao. When he realizes that she is attracted to his friend Xiao Jian, he kept his feelings to himself and protect her from a distance. A story about two sisters falling for one man after the younger sister asks the older sister to go on a date in her stead.

Ning Xia (Jiang Mengjie) is an ordinary office worker. She once saved Zhao Dan Qiao (Dennis Oh), a young executive who has been searching for her for years. She finds a job at his company though the two start out with their initial biases towards each other and oblivious to their connection in the past.

Ning Xia has been using the username Little Red Bean to keep in touch with a person named Shu Dong online. When she finds out that Zhao Dan Qiao is the person that she has been chatting with, she becomes suspicious and tells her cousin Ning Xin (Lu Jiarong) to meet with him instead. After being dumped by her ex-boyfriend for money and learning that Zhao Dan Qiao comes from a rich family, Ning Xin becomes determined to marry him and becomes a roadblock when Ning Xia and Zhao Dan Qiao start falling for each other.

Sui Tang Yanyi begins in the 580s with the conquest of the Chen dynasty (557-589) by the Sui dynasty under Emperor Wen, and concludes with the return of the Tang dynasty's Emperor Xuanzong to the capital Chang'an in 758 near the end of the An Lushan Rebellion (755-763).

The plot is made up of three main story lines.

The first, with Emperor Yang of Sui and his concubine Zhu Gui'er (朱貴兒) as the central characters, covers the events in the political arena and inner palace in the final years of the Sui dynasty.

The second story line narrates a turbulent period known as the transition from Sui to Tang, when heroes such as Qin Shubao,Shan Xiongxin (單雄信), Cheng Yaojin (程咬金) and Xu Maogong rise up to overthrow the Sui dynasty, followed by stories of how Li Shimin (the future Emperor Taizong of Tang) defeated his rivals and eventually solidified the Tang dynasty's sovereignty over China.

The last story line tells of the romance between Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and Consort Yang, and the events of the An Lushan Rebellion.
